  • 4 speed trans. advice

    Hi group,

I currently have two good 4 speed Festy transmissions sitting beside my garage. As always, I hate throw anything out Festiva, I can't seem to imagine the scenerio where I might go through the trouble to installing a 4-spd. I have an extra 5-spd if my current one goes.

So my question is, what the heck do I do with them? Boat anchors? Cement foundation filler? scrap?

I'd sell them dirt cheap, and even give them to a needy FF.com'er.

    Brenton
    Because....45 MPG.

I wonder if it's possible to convert them to 5 speeds by adding drive and driven gears to the input and output shafts.

There has been an ongoing discussion about this somewhere here. I would think the racers would want a 4 speed over a five. Especially autocross. But what do I know.:dontknow:

For people using their cars under 55 MPH especially, a 4 spd is a good option. You only drop 1500 RPM in the 5th gear. I rarely use 5th in my 74 mile each day commute myself, but you do the long hauls, Brenton. Interstate driving is when that second overdrive is handy. I would think that 2nd gear & reverse inside those MTX would come in handy for someone after all the tranaxles get scarce in junkyards myself. There is no difference in 4 & 5 spds except the extra gear set, and removal of the lockout after all.

4th gear is .89:1 and 5th gear is .67:1. Final drive on both is 3.78:1 if I remember right. Anybody know the ratios for gears 1-3 and reverse?
