  • Core values

Just picked up a pair of new brake calipers. Price each was $33. Core value, $35. So, if you have any junk ones laying around, don't sell 'em for scrap. Find a rebuilder who'll buy them.
BTW. My auto parts guy has access to 26 big warehouses nation wide. There were only 6 available. The boxes are marked www.autodone.com. and are not marked as rebuilt.

Core charges do not relate to the actual value of the part as a core for rebuild!
They are more to insure they get a core back and if not are very well compensated for not getting a core back!
Bet you have a hard time finding someone to buy anything less than 10 or 20 sets as cores.
But, I'd be happy if you did!
Let us know if you do.

Just did a search on automotive core buyers. This appears to be a big industry with a couple associations and all - especially for the big stuff. Pu241, I think you're right. Someone would have to have quite a few of anything unless it was worth really big bucks. The core exceeding the price was just something new to me.

High core costs started some years ago!
I guess they decided if they don't get a core they might as well make money off it!
It is a heck of an incentive to return that core!
I always keep a set of cores for various things (calipers, axles, alternators, etc) so I can get the part without paying for the core charge.
Will bet control arms will start to require cores soon!

Holy crap! Well it is a 310amp alternator. At least the core wasnt twice the cost of the alternator itself.

My take on core charges has always been...bet he won't...like rebates...do you think indy garages post core charges on their invoices.

I've done some work for one of the largest rebuilders in the US....Cardone...thier comments to me have always been that it is cheaper to buy parts from a retailer than to by them from a chopper....translation....the retailer is making money on both ends.
