  • Stock tire sizes and the future of Festiva rubber...

I've gone to several places the past few days and no one has any 12" tires at all. They say they are phased out and they won't order them from Europe.

Walmart online doesn't list them any more.

I was thinking about getting a new set of 165/70-12s for my alloys on Twinstiva now so I'd have a set in case I ever picked up another stock bolt pattern Festiva that needed tires. Or I could sell that set later on after all mine were converted to 4 X 100mm.

There are still some available online but are pricey and shipping adds more cost to that insult.

The existance of 165/70-13s and other smallish 13" sizes are going the same route and being phased out or are already "obsolete."

I brought this possibility up in a post a year or so ago.

We need to see about planning for some kind of way to get our little tires at a better cost if possible. Perhaps a group buy once in a while from FMS or another vendor who could arrange a shipment from Europe or something?

With a few thousand folks on here we should be able to create enough demand for an occasional shipment to each coast, or at least the midwest.

Our tires are small, cheap and should cost less than other sizes. Now it it going in the opposite direction and there may be no going back. New "real small cars" weigh what a "compact" did back in the eighties (over 2200 pounds) and they are coming with 14 and 15" wheels!! So that's no help.

The "perfect" budget performance all-season, the Falken Ziex in 175/60-13 has been out of production now for a while. How long until the other options like the Toyo Proxes in 195/45-14 and the off brand 185/55-14s, etc. are gone?

We may soon see the day when 155/80 and 175/70 13s are phased out. Those will usually fit our cars, but are actually pretty inefficient and too tall and heavy for maximum mpgs and performance.

    Any ideas??

For example, any mass shipment could bring in the following sizes:

    145/80-12
    155/80-12
    165/70-12

    165/65-13
    165/70-13
    145/80-13
    175/60-13
    185/55-13

    175/60-14
    185/55-14

Europe has minicompacts and smaller cars that still need tiny sizes that they still make and sell over there. We need to tap that resource for ourselves!

My local Grismer tire place says they import their Nokians in one con-nex box once a year. Maybe this would work for a shipment of tiny sizes. I could talk to them if we got a large enough order.

I posted this in the last month or so....I/m to lazy to search.

Nankang out of China is currently making 12 inchers. Their exclusive domestic importer is TIRECO in California.

          http://www.tireco.com

I contacted them via the link (tab) on their home page explaining my delema and asking for names/phone numbers of distributors in my area. They gave me the name of a master distributor in New Jersey. I called NJ and they gave me the name and number of a guy a couple of mile away in Nazereth, PA. Called him...droped off the rims in the AM and picked them up in the PM. $46 each....mounted and balanced.

Last time I spent $35 each for Geostar's....the local Geostar rep could get them but he want payment in full ($65 each) before ordering. I was pissed...I buy at least one if not two full sets of tires from him every year. and I drop off the rims for the treads to be mounted at his convenience. I did the best thing....I'll never go back.

I have been happy with the Nexen 175/60/13s. They have stood up to my abuse better than Falkens, or Sumitomos. I buy 2 sets a year at least, so I could be interested in a group buy, and I can be in Columbus reasonably quickly from Parkersburg!

Maybe this should be a sticky, for those who want to check out local places to get their 12s.

It could be updated every so often with a "Master List" of little tire vendors and the approximate costs, etc.

In the meantime, we need to enter into talks with manufacturers and importers to see what their plans are in regards to keeping us supplied with our "fixes."

We should also investigate some sort of group buying plan to get the best prices and serve as a "block of consumers" to better get vendors' attention so they don't forget us.

                          Any more ideas?
