need help! cv axle install

  • need help! cv axle install

    im trying to replace my driver cv axle, i got the axle nut off,got the front part of brakes off,now trying to get rotor off,wont budge! any suggestions? am i suppose to take back part of brake off to?

    Rotor doesn't come off!

    Shouldn't have to remove calipers just to remove axle!

    Turn the sterring wheel to the far right, to give you room to work.

    Might have to push the axle in with a gear puller.

    It should then clear the hub and then give it a hard tug and it should come out of the tranny.

    Install is reverse of the above.

    Recommend using an impact wrench to install the axle nut!

      thnx,yea after i posted i went out and got everything apart,its done,wont to bad,30-45 mins. just got 1 more question,were do i add the gear oil! a bunch ran out when i pulled the axle out.and what kind should i get.im used to auto trans,is there a way to check the gear oil level??

        were do you add the gear oil at? is there a way to check the oil? (amount) like in a auto trans?

          Mercon III ATX fluid!

          Follow the speedo cable down to tranny.

          Undo the hex shaped shroud that the speedo cable goes into.

          Then remove the 10mm hex bolt that holds the gearing to the speedo in place.

          Pull it up and out.

          the resulting hole is how you fill the tranny.

          You need to have a Haynes manual to determine the level via the gear hold down.

          Or maybe someone can better describe how to read it!

          Or maybe a pic!

          Or you can completely drain it and fill it with 2.6 qts.

          But the Haynes manual has a good pic in it!

            thnx helps in a way,but seems how my cable is unhooked?? dont no y? was unhhoked when i bought it. but yea some pice would be great! dont have manual book. parts stores round here dont have any either?? i looked already.

              Wont help you today but theres almost always manuals on ebay.
              1988 p.o.s. (228,000 and still going)

                ok found everything, also found out why speedo cable is not hooked up,the wire inside is broke. any one got one for sale??

                  this is my first festiva, so learning alot as i work on it,thnx for any help,im used to working on old school chevys! lol,so easy to work on.lol so if im not mistaking from the looks of the rotor,when i replace them,its gonna all be 1 piece? (the bracket on back for strut ect..?) i know on my other car just the rotor pulls right off.and replace it.

                    The rotor is pressed on. Here is a tranny dip stick I made. Its a lot easier to use then the speedo gear.
