To fix right I think you would have to cut, and repair bad sections, and replace panels. If it were my car I would clean out the infected area with a wire grinder, and repair with fiberglass

Yep thats my Festiva I was wondering too what the best way to fix this would be.
-93' L BP swap/e-series, coilovers, RIO front swap, redrilled festy drums, Miata 14" 7 spokes.
-88' Mazda 323 SE, work in progress..
      -85' Nissan Sentra 5 spd.

        MJD,

Just to give you an example of what you might expect.
The first picture is of the right side but is typical of how the left side looked. Youy can see that the rears suspension attach point was in rough shape. Fortunately, the right side isn't this bad bit I will patch the outer frame rust. Note: I'm calling this the "frame" for the lack of a better description. The remaining pictures show the repair sequence. Something similar will have to be done to the inboard side of the frame area but I'll need to remove fuel, vapor, and brake lines that are too close for comfort to the area where welding will be done. I'm using .060 thich material.

I still have to fabricate- bend-to-shape and install a patch where a piece of frame has rusted away right at the suspension pivot. BTW, I didn't see this until the other welding was being done.

        Good luck. CZ
