  • Tailpipe turbocharger?

    Coffee Talk. Discuss among ourselves.
A friend sent this to me.

My initial, and uninformed, thought is that it's mostly about this sales bullet:
The turbo acts as a muffler and sounds like an aftermarket performance muffler. Turbo spool and rushing air from the blow-off valve make a unique sound that will turn heads!

mounting so far downstream in the exhaust has definate benefits and drawbacks. Engine compartment space becomes a non-issue, no intercooler is needed because of the length of the pressure pipe. Plumbing oil/coolant (if used) to the turbo(s) can be a problem, as well as routing the air plumbing.

If the goal is simply increased power output, a rear mounted system is good. However, the original purpose of a turbo was to recover wasted energy (exhaust heat) to increase the engine's efficiency. By placing the turbo so far downstream, a large percentage of the exhaust heat is lost before the gases reach the turbo, reducing efficiency. It works, works well, but is not as efficient as a conventional system. Remember when looking at their HP/Tq numbers. ALOT of that has to do with tuning, not the hardware.

Wonder what they would say if you asked for one for a stock festiva.

Im pretty much in agreement with Jim on all of that. Depending on how long the pipe is it might still be a good to run an intercooler. While it should be much cooler sitting that far away from the block/head, I would still measure your air intake temp to see if its advantageous...it could easily vary depending on each individual application. And Ive seen those kits on cars making a LOT of power and personally, I think its a good idea and a nice viable option if you have space issues.

I've seen a kit up close and personal on a newer white mustang gt. He had the motor built as well, and during break in was putting down mid 400's. With the wick turned up he will see 600 I'm sure.

What's the throttle response like with a setup like that? I would think there would be some lag.

I have researched those before, and the big thing is to realize you need a slightly smaller turbo because of the exhaust gas looses some of its heat and velocity as it cools. Also I was told its cheaper to build one of the kits yourself, but you have to source a auxiliary oil pump that will hold up to the oils hot temps. Would definitely be cool to see.

They have had these kits for F bodies (Camaro,SS,Z-28, Firebird ,Trans am ) for several years now .

Turbo mounts by the rear end .

It makes good power , a little less than a engine mount turbo ,and it does create less clutter and the longer piping does work as a cooler .
