  • Punching a hole in the cat. Question

    Hi ya'll

I bought the CL 88LX in Portland. I'll be picking it up next week. It most likely has a plugged cat. I will need to unplug temp. to get it back home. Can someone inform me on the best way to do this? Remove, literally punch a hole through it? If so, with what? I have two extra cats, but most likely can't fly with them.

    Thanks!

drop the cat from the downpipe, and use the tire iron to bust out all of the catalyst substrate (ceramic honeycomb). Make sure you get out ALL the loose pieces. Bolt the cat back to the downpipe, and away you go...

      Brenton,

Look at one of your Festys. Replicate the bends where the cat is, but minus the cat, adding a filler exhaust pipe instead. Make sure you take a sawzall with you and 2 muffler clamps. When you get there, drive the Festy to the nearest gas station. Plug your sawzall in, cut out the cat, replace with your "new" filler exhaust pipe, add the two clamps and drive back to St. Cloud. Hang onto the cat 'til metal prices go back up and sell it for $75 or whatever so they can get the platinum out of it.

Punching the hole is the easy part....catching the little buggars can be a real chore, though!

                1) because of it's reported symptoms. 2) A well respected member of ours Also believes it so.

It might also be the fuel filter or any array of other issues for that matter, but I'll go on what I have for the moment, and take advange of asking questions on the site while a computer is available.

Does that answer your question Pirate?

no it doesn't answer my question, a cat doesn't just plug up because it feels like it, it plugs up for a reason, is the engine running right?

I see your point, but I think he's trying to figure out a way to get it home before he gets too much into anything else. You are right, could be other things. If in doubt, disco the cat, and see how it runs. It'll be loud as heck, but would answer the question.

Is there a flexable temp. pipe substance that can be put in place where the cat has been removed?

I'm wondering if I should jsut fly with a cat. in my checked baggage, with a sign taped to it "Auto part. Not a bomb!"

Couldn't you just ship it to the person you bought the car from? Then it will be there when you get there...
