Hi all,
Well, I flew into Portland last Thusday evening, took the tram downtown, walked to the SE, met the fella with the 88 LX. It was (is) a little rougher than the picture suggested (always is) but rust free, working A/C power mirrors, cargo cover, nice LX interior (except door panels) console, split seat (no trays though) a couple easy dents, cracked windshield. I talked him down to $300 bucks, pulled it over to an empty parking lot next door (while he and his buddies skateboarded around me) changed the fuel filter and punched out the cat, still ran like crap anything over 3K RPM's. Temp. stumped, I drove it down here to my brothers in Nor-Cal (made it 700 miles @ 3K rpm's or less...sometimes @ 30mph up grades) getting the worst MPG I've ever got in a festiva (30MPG) This morning my brother took one listen: "The timing belt slipped a tooth." we pulled the cover, moved it back to TDC, and now she runs like a top. It was at least 3 teeth off, another testement to the amazingness of these little gems. Compression is 180 arcoss the board. The kid already replaced: battery, clutch, plus, wires, air filter, cap/rot. before giving up. The tires are even 80%. Before it got dark tonight, my brother and I welded up a muffler (taken off a dead Justy, sounds pretty good) tomorrow I'm replacing a noisy water pump, popping a couple dents out, and maybe buff the paint for the trip back to Minnesota.
After getting home, all the LX stuff is coming off and will be for sale here on the site or eBay (include tach cluster and intermit. wiper stick to above list) and replaced with "L" level parts. The folks that end up with my festys tend to be the MPG set and care little for rare options.
Every time I do this I fall in love with these cars a little more...
