  • the trouble with "Trouble"

So, after stating to several members that i have a story to tell about my newest aquisition, here it is:

about 3 weeks ago, Batstiva posted of a festiva on e-Bay for sale that was "up my way". Well the price was right and needless to say, i bought it. The owner of the Festy, (mr. Kitchen) was awesome enough to let it sit till i could arrange transportation (car has no brakes). he also informed me of 2 more near by that i should look at (and i will in the very near furture).

Last Fri was the big day, and i had my best friend, Mike, meet me after his shift let out at 6AM, and we rolled out to pick up the dolly. Everything was going VERY smoothly, and i had a really good feeling about the whole situation. Unfortunately (and unbenounced to me untill after the ordeal), Mike wasn't sharing the same feelings.

This is how it went down:

the weather to start the day

Mike, minus 18 hours of sleep at this point:

    rolling north on I81

Notice how his state hasn't changed in the last 50 miles...

At this point i ask if he's still good to drive and i get the "OK", and we continue...

about 40 miles out from the destination, we hit the deviding point in the weather pattern and are happy to see no snow for the pick up. Once off 81, the roads in that area get REALLY small and goat path like. Fun when your towing an 83" dolly that likes to shake the rear of the truck no matter what speed you're going. At this time i have to point out that for the past 70 miles or so, Mike has made note of the shaking and the irritation that it causes him, on SEVERAL occations. As we near the destination, and our last turn (which we pass due to a renaming of the road that hasn't been corrected in Google), we go too far and have to turn around. I'm just about to call Mr. Kitchen, when i notice that Mike has thrown the truck into reverse..... and GUNS IT!!! nnooOOOOOO!!

    BANG, POP

He was never good at reversing with a trailer to begin with, and having no sleep for the past 21 hrs didn't help.

One blown tire, ensuing tire change, dented bed side, and 2 miles later, we pick up the car.

Now I'm driving.... Mike no longer trusts himself and is dead tired. Back onto 81 and things are going smootly again. I pull off of 81 to get back onto 72 for fuel and home, pick up some burgers and recheck the dolly. Things are still good.

Now we're about 2 miles north of the Lebanon City line and headed down a grade, and a car in front of us is making a left turn. There's plenty of space between us and I slow up a bit so that i don't have to stop before he turns. I'm slowing, SLOWING, EASY... BANG!!!

WTF!!! I look back and the festy is now tilted forward........, not good.

WE pull over and this is what I find:

Now I've had enough and decide to take pics of all the damage for the day:

All I can do is laugh and inspect the car. Both straps had loosened themselves, not on the wratchet side, but on the HOOK side. WIERD!!!! We try to lift the front back onto the dolly, but that doesn't work an Mike's been up for 26 hrs at this point, so we leave the car where it is and head home.

A few hours later and Dad, Caety and I arrive back at the festy with tools and 2 jacks. 30min later and "Trouble" is back on the dolly and headed home, incedent free.

that's my story and i'm sticking to it......

Good story, glad no one was hurt, could have been worse if car had rolled off the back.

FYI always make sure front wheel drive manual shift car is in gear, auto car in park, lock steering wheel if possible, double check straps after about a 1/4 mile, use safety chains.

I'm saying this from experence,I tow over 250 cars a year with a tow dolly, and sometimes after hitting a few bumps tie down straps will loosen up,also if steering wheels turn on dolly, straps will loosen or come off wheels

I like to have chains and straps both attached.

I did see a car that was being towed with a tow dolly jack knife once and round over.

it has some under chassis rott that needs to be adressed, and the brake lines run, but other than that it's all there and working very well.

the truck is a '98 1500 6.5 diesel and it WAS mint up untill the incident, it hasn't even reached 66,000 miles yet. it kinda sucks....
