  • Wheel Tip

I think I've shared this before, but I'll share again since I ran into this problem again today. Most of you know that after time, Festiva wheels like to rust onto the hub. Then when you go to remove the wheel they can be nearly impossible to remove. I was rotating my tires today, and the rears were stuck on pretty good(haven't been removed since I bought new tires last fall). The fronts were fine because I had the wheels off this summer when I did my brakes, and I did my little trick.

To fix this problem, when you have a wheel off, before re-installing, coat the mating surface on the back side of the wheel(you can see the outline of the mating surface) with anti-sieze compound. I do this everytime I have the wheels off. I also put anti-sieze on the lugs. If fact, the older I get, the more anti-seize I use. I use to buy it in little tubes, now I buy it in big jars that have brushes for easy application. Pretty much when I do any auto work, I put the stuff on just about every bolt before re-assembly.

I saw your title and thought when are people going to learn the anti-seize is your friend? Then I read a little further and thought, yea, what he said!

Then on my knees, shoulders and elbows.

Seriously though, have you ever had any problems with lug nuts/bolts loosening using anti-seize?

I've never had any issues. I think as long as you torque them down properly, you'll be fine.

                CharlieZ,
I don't think you can have any problems if the wheel bolts are torques to proper.

I use 69 ft lbs just for easy memory. I've put 16,000 miles on in the last 10 months without a problem.

Impact wrench. If you don't have one, maybe stop by a tire shop and see if they would loosen it up for you, then put it back on, but not so tight.

They sell electric impacts....you can find them on ebay cheap used.

Heat it up with a propane torch and use a 24" breaker bar on it if you wish not to purchase an impact.

^^You can pick up a Chicago brand one at Harbor Freight for around $50.00. I got one a few days ago to remove the crankshaft bolt and it worked like a champ.

or instead of 3/8" ratchets, try 1/2", plus you can get more torque with a bar on the ratchet

My rule of thumb...if it doesn't get Loctite...it gets anti-sieze.
