yeah they are all crap, but they were designed to work not work well, dont push down hard either, it will pop out and hit the exhaust pipe

Mine was so sloppy when I got the car. The problem is the shifter bushings. I made my own but they can be bought and replaced. It really stiffened up my shifter. Here is Wil's how to article on fixing this problem:http://www.projectmazda.com/howto/bushings/

you might just try tightening up the bolts in the shift linkage. When I first got my festiva they were all loose and it was difficult to even find 5th or reverse, now it just feels like a bad shifter.

Does anyone know how the feel is of the short shifter? Does that make it incredibly notchy?

I love my short throw shifter.. Now it feels wierd driving a stock Festiva with the long shifter...

"notchy"?? Mine is tight and quick I'd say 4" max from 1st to 2nd from the tip of the shifter with the knob removed.. so with my capri knob it's like a 2-3" shift. But if you don't know where 3rd or 5th is, you will grind. Noone that has driven my car has ever done so without grinding at least once. (even me when I first installed it)

I test drove an srt-4 on monday. It had a really short throw, maybe 2" square. It was also really notchy. It felt like I was about to break the handle. The salesman said it was a sideeffect of the short throw.

cutting the top off doesnt make it a short throw it makes it shorter in length but not actually short throgh. You have to increas the length of the bottom of shifter between the ball and where it mounts to the shift rod. remove the shifter take a torch and heat the ball and tap it up with a hammer. this is from what i have read on other forums i made one for my escort but never used it so i cant tell you for sure if this is true.

the shifter pivots on the ball. cutting the top, OR lengthening the bottom will both have exactly the same effect. the effect is doubled when both are done.

think about this now, if the shifter on top of the ball was 1 inch long, youre maximum throw would be 2 inches, reguardless of weither or not the linkage is even hooked up to the transmission.

                        I love mine too:

Sits right at the top of the seats there, it's nice and low and the throw is pretty damn short (that's with the shifter adjusted about 3/4 of the way down and a little bit cut off the top too)

I never have a problem with grinding gears and the shifter itself isn't sloppy.

It's a Pacesetter for a first gen Probe if you look in AutoZone or wherever. (same as the steering wheel stuff)

I have a fix for that, I make a bracket that supports the back and prevents it from falling out. Also after posting about the bracket on the Mx3 page, they had guys that had tried the self tappers into the rubber method, and found that that fails too, seems the rubber ends up tearing away from the self tapper. So if you want it fixed you can either pay the $150 for the replacement from a dealer (if you can find it) or $25 for my bracket and not worry about it anymore.

or.. (not trying to hurt anyones sales) jerry rig it like I have for next to nothing.. The interior coat hanger hook from the car works as well.. I've had 1 from a jy on mine for 2 years now. YES, the plastic hook with the brass insert that is attached to the headliner... It hasn't cracked, come apart, melted or any of those things that I thought would happen... I did this with the complete intention of buying one of Chris' brackets when it failed.. It just hasn't yet.

                              brackets

I have a fresh batch of them made up and ready to go, I make them out of 1/8 inch steel so you won't have any worries about it EVER breaking.
$25 shipped the day after I receive payment, I take pay-pal and money orders.
