Anyone have a Festiva with a tach? Can you run it in fourth gear at 60 and then 70 and see what the rpm's are versus fifth gear? If anyone can figure it out...how many more revolutions would a four speed car ..or perhaps automatic car go in 100,000 miles. Has this been asked before?

How on earth did you locate that at all..and so quickly???? Wow! He said his was in kph and he tried to be accurate. This was his result...yikes...four speeds were highway screamers! I am not good at cut and paste so this is the best I can do:
      45MPH @ 2400rpm
      50MPH @ 2700rpm
      55MPH @ 2900rpm
      60MPH @ 3200rpm
      65MPH @ 3500rpm
      70MPH @ 3750rpm
      75MPH @ 4000rpm
      80MPH @ 4300rpm

for an automatic trans, add 300-350 rpm to each of those, for losses thru the non-lockup torque converter.

The poor little things were strung out with four speeds and REALLY strung out with automatic then! No wonder my old blue four speed burned oil, it was overworked! Seemed silly to only give the early L models a four speed...probably caused a lot of early demises.

i was just driving my pop's festy w/ aspire 5 speed tranny and that really screams on the highway too, but it also has very good pickup in 5th. 1st is so low its almost useless, i always start off in 2nd when i drive his car.

not really... My auto has well over 100k abuse-filled miles with no internal engine issues. And I travel I95 at 70-80mph for 60 miles a day.

Most 1.3Ls burned oil because the valve stem seals have a propencity for hardening and cracking.

They're not really working hard till about 5500rpm.

I think my 88 LX five speed was doing 2500 rpm in fifth at 60...so it wasn't that bad. It gets worse the faster you go though, I assume 3000 at 75..not too bad for a 1.3, but with the four speed 75 is a lot higher . It says above 4000 rpm so that is 1000 more rpm at 75. You could theoretically go 100 mph in a five speed at the same rpm a four speed would be doing at 75 I guess.

                  I have noticed in mine that the differance is about 600 - 700 rpms...not 1000, between 4th and 5th

Wind noise is more of an issue at higher speeds than is engine noise!

Maybe you could update me...just curious. I did notice the five speed was quieter on the highway. My last two were fuel injected 91 and 93 and no tach. The L models I had did not have tachs..the four speeds or five speeds...only the 88 LX did and that was in 97-99...too long ago to remember!
