  • Anyone know anything about 4x4s?

So i picked up a 88 blazer s10 4x4 the other day. when i drive it i can hear a somewhat light knocking sound and it sounds like its coming from the area where the drive selector is (on the floor). i can park it, and put it 4x4, goes in fine, but it doesnt like to come out. and sometimes it doesnt like to go into park. when idling it also likes to die before its warmed up. anyone hae any tips on what to tackle or how to tackle it?

the guy i bought it from told me that it could use new universals. i dont know what relevance there is.

mods if this is in the wrong section, move it pleasee

Maybe a few solenoids are going out in the transmission. Something to check. The hard part is getting to them to check if they're getting proper signal.

Take it back to the back porch, join the 3 string revolution.

When you check under the vehicle, check the u-bolts where it hooks up to the transfer case. Make sure they are nice and tight. Sometimes on a vehicle that old the bearings get ground down alittle inside the caps and can cause it to click. The shifting sounds like a solenoid like anomoly said

Don't take this to the bank but...............

On the older '78 back full time automatic transfer cases, when the transfer case drive chain would wear, I think I remember they made a knocking sound. Seems I remember the manual transmission cases were different.

I don't know if the later ones are made the same way. You might want to check this out.

          as mentioned above...

BUT, the U-Joints can make the noise you described too.

thats something i wanted to hear.

few things i forgot to mention. Its an Auto. the only time i hear the noise is when driving and when i let off the gas and then press again.

i can get it into park by pulling the lever foward as hard as i can without breaking it. and then almost slamming it up into park and puchins forward pretty rough. (its not as bad as it sounds, gotta be rough with it, but im nto breaking it)

im going to buy a manual for it. then do the Universals myself. but the solenoid sounds liek something id have to get done professionally... any input?

thanks you guys. i mean. i was stressin this. 1200 for a new truck. i was worried id have to put that much back into her.

Is the shifter on the column or floor?

If on the floor we had one a few months ago come in with a similiar problem.
I found one of those hair band things chicks wear "scrunchy?" that at one time was wrapped around the shifter and worked its way down inside the assembly, no matter how hard you pushed it wouldn't fully go into park.

collumn. I say u bolts myself. Swap to a manual trans, get some 308 gears, give her a tune up and get some decent gas mileage.

the shifter is on the column, but the 4x4 selector is on the floor. both of them have issues. the 4x4 slector doesnt want to come out of 4x4 and the comlumn shifter doesnt want to go into park. and when its in reverse the lights dont come on. but they do come on around that area. like when you pull down to go into revers they flash and you can tweak it a bit and have reverse lights.

but thanks for the info. im gona get a manual soon.

when you talk about the ubolts... they just need tightened?
