  • alloys, paint or not ?

i cant seem to sell my alloys which have been listed on ebay for awhile. i have a few bids but i dont think its going to reach my reserve. they are the 12inch for the festy. so im asking the question should i paint them or not ? the clear coat is off in some places, theres no curb rash.the color of my festy is silver. what color should i paint them to match ?i was trying to sell them to purchase 13 inch wheels and tires. what do you think paint or no paint. ?silver, white, black, glossy or flat ? thanks

well, regardless of the condition of the finish, stock alloys with no physical damage only seem to pull $100-$120 a set. What have you been asking for them?

Ive thought about painting a set white to put on a white car. The sport model came with white alloys but I personally didnt like them on the red cars. White on white or white on black is OK IMO but red needs silver.

get a can of graphite duplicolor wheel coat. they would look awesome on a silver festy with that paint. its almost like a gunmetal color. that paint covers nice, especially with a coat of cheapy primer first. here is a pic of my old integra with painted wheels

do you have flaking issues a couple years later? Of course, doing it right and taking the tires off would be key.

no flaking issues and no brake dust stains. my friend still owns the car. no need to remove the tires either, just wedge in index cards all around between the wheel/tire. it works like a charm. i think i usually use 20 index cars to go around, but its worth the extra time. just wedge in the corners.

well, I think that, more than the paint, is your problem.

Personally, I've never paid more than $100 for a set of Festy alloys.

in fact, I just paid $250 for a full set of Aspire alloys, professionally refinished, with new tires.

You may want to reconsider your estimate of their value. Not saying you have to, just a recommendation if you want them gone fast.

Another vote here for paint. I painted my stock 12's with the duplicolor as well and I've been happy with the results. After a year they still look great and have only gotten the odd chip from careless tireshops. And even if they do mark up it's really easy to give the chipped area a quick spray and they look good as new.

                    wheels

im in no rush to sell them, id rather keep them paint them and put them back on the festy than sell them for a mere $$100.00 i just thought i could update my rims. thanks for the input . like the idea of the paint color.

I did the EXACT same thing. I painted mine "Chrome" which looks more silver-sparkly. I sanded mine down with 60-80 grit, then sprayed with a $4 can of Duplicolor. They look great, and if the paint does ever start to chip, It will be a simple and easy fix. $5 for the whole project, and I didn't even take the wheels off my festiva.

i think they call it aluminum or just silver, but that paint comes out nice also. i painted the wheels on my father's festiva with that paint, using the same index card method, it works like a charm. its worth the extra 10 mins to take all the wheels off the car and spray them, you will be happier with the finished product. here is a pic of the wheels i painted silver:

I have a simular issue going on. I have three silver alum 12's and three white sport alum. 12's...I've wondered if the white can be removed (giving me a full set of silver 12's) or paint one white. I plan to eventually put together a nicer EFI and run a set of alum 12's on it.
                              Because....45 MPG.
