did they ever put barrier hoses on the festiva? or were they always the old r12 hoses? i know some manufacturers put the barrier hoses (read 134a hoses) on cars before the "big switch."

the problem with products like this is they are still corosive to the o-rings and will shorten the life of a compressor
???huh???
short answer; no.
Freeze12 works just fine. It doesn't attack anything. The issue with both Freeze12 and R134a is that it migrates thru the old style rubber hoses.
What IS potentially damaging is the type of oil used. Ester is not the friendly-ist oil, but is compatible with mineral oil, and will emulsify R134a. R134a usually requires PAG oil, because it reacts poorly with mineral oil, creating the caustic componds that degrade components. To prevent system damage, just drain the mineral oil from all the components, flush the system with denatured alcohol, and recharge with PAG and R134a or Freeze12.
to answer another question; no, Kia never equipped the Festiva with barrier hoses.
last answer to first question; there was/is no retrofit kit available from Ford. Ford's official position was to not refit any system.
