  • good news, bad news

Now that the weather is getting better, I have started to reassemble my Festiva. I have parts accumulated over the last three years.I will need help from the forum from time to time. Especially with the wiring. Good news. I accidentally found the screws to my fan motor yesterday. Bad news. I can't find my rad cap. I guess I will just have to keep looking. We need more members from California, Nevada and New Mexico. As you can see from my fan shroud and screws, there is not a spec of rust. Sure it costs more to ship the parts up here, but it's worth it. A new fan motor doesn't hurt either.
While I was drilling out the rusted screw on my 89 manual rad, the drill went through and went through the center of the bolt and through the plastic reservoir ! Scratch one rad. The only thing I salvaged was the sensor at the bottom. It was in very good shape. My 93 auto rad does not have provision for a sensor. I will be installing air. I will have to buy a vacuum idle up for both the air and power steering.

Good luck on the reassemble. I think youve got some parts from me. Try some JB weld on the radiator hole if its in a good spot. I rebuilt a neck ( where the cap goes ) on a radiator with JB weld eight years ago and its still working.

        power steering belt

I am searching for the right size belt for my Festiva power steering pump. There is only one problem. I also have air. So, the stock length belts are too short, since they were designed to work with a small idler pulley.

I started with 36.5", then 37". I still cannot pull the belt on to the power steering pulley. I am going to try an AC belt from a 79-84 VW Jetta.

It is 12.5 X 960 mm. I believe it should do the trick. It is the exact width of the festiva belt and just under 38". I will keep you posted. I don't think power steering and air conditioning were ever offered together from the factory. There is serious interference with the PS tensioning screw and the AC compressor connection.

yes, they were. But, a narrow ribbed belt was used on that setup, like an Aspire. Compressor was mounted lower (unique bracket).

            38"

I needed exactly a 38" belt. Now I need some A/C block off caps, until I get the rad and lower rad hose in. I will have to figure how to reroute the hose around the power steering adjusting lock nut. I assume the A/C connectors are some type of standard size? Right?
