  • Hotter plug

Ok, i have a question. As read in a thread before, my valve guides are a little worn and when i first start car it blows a little smoke. I went to a thicker oil-20-50 and put in some of that Bardahl stop smoke which is also thick and the combo of these two has helped to where only a little smoke comes out at start-up. I also sprayed bleach into the tailpipe to rid it of soot build-up. Im going for emission check Wed. Heres my question. Would it be better to run a hotter plug during the check or do you think it wouldn't make any difference. It is running better since i re=did the timing belt. I already put in new plugs also. I have also put in injection cleaner and running it for week now.

Guess no one knows, ok. We will see what happens when i take it in for emission check. If it passes, i'll drive it. If it don't and its because of oil, i'll just make a parts car out of it or sell it to someone who doesnt have to get car's emission checked. ty

when i went to lots thicker oil to stop the smoking thing, my 1997 aspire started smoking all the time. i think our cars need thin oil regardless of valve guide wear. Buy the 5qt jugs of yellow bottle pennzoil at wallyworld until you can save time and the funds to pull the head. (or just buy a b6)

hotter plug can help, but it also increases the chance of detonation, also may raise your nox level on a test. Keep your timing at oem level and one heat range shouldnt be bad. if it only smokes at startup you probably can squeak by if you get the engine hot when its about to test. My 1995 puffs a little if i let the car sit a week, and it passed 15k miles ago.

ty getnpsi. I plan to go to a thinner oil after the testing is done and i wont have to test again for two years by then i can rebuild the motor. It needs new shocks and struts and few other things that i don't want to get if it doesnt pass emissions tomorrow. It will be nice and warm by the time i get there tomorrow from where i work so im hoping all will be good. I do get the penzoil, i like that brand.
