  • Questions about engines and trannies.

    Group,

I was thinking on my way back from Seattle (with a 4-spd!!!! Why?! Kia, Why?!)

What would be the best engine/trans. config. for max-MPG's Levitan told me the aspire 5-spds have a higher final drive gear (like the XFi's do in the metro world) which in theory would increase MPG's a little. BUt then I read somewhere over on a yahoo site that the aspire actually has a lower final drive gear. Which one it taller, Festy or Aspire manuals?

Also, is there any difference between the festy EFI's and the Aspire EFI's in this regard? Is one more efficient for any reason than the other?

    Thanks,
    FX
    Because....45 MPG.

Festys should be better because of weight but aspires are more aerodynamic. The aspire has a lower (better acceleration) final drive than a festy. So in reality the festy should turn less R's going down the road. 5 speed is def. better.

Thanks. I should clarify, I'm not considering an aspire for anything more than parts. It would be a festiva with the engine/trans. combo. FX

cool the aspires have roller rockers so a little less friction should help.

            Hey Brenton,
Let me clarify myself. I don't know which tranny is higher or lower. I do know the Aspire ratio is better for top end ie faster car. Elcamino1, Packrat, and I got into a little race last year at Ozark Meet. This is where I'd love to brag about how I smoked Packrat, but I wouldn't do that because he's my buddy . Anyways, I stayed perfectly side by side with Will thru 4th gear, but when we got to 5th gear, he walked away from me. ElCamino1 has an Aspire tranny in his car.

aspire trannies have a better final for acceleration that is why he pulled on you. festys have a better cruising gear =less rpms at highway speed= better mpgs

Aspire b3 + festy 5sp in an aspire with some weight loss should give best mpg. Aerodynamics play a big factor at highway speed. Lower the car too, that will help.

Taller tires will drop rpms too but make the speedo inaccurate. They will also be heavier which can hurt mpg.
