  • Should I buy it?

    I just got offered a chance to buy an all original '69 Galaxie XL Sportsroof. It is in very good shape and has been sitting for 8 years in a garage. It is light metallic green with a perfect black leather interior. It has under 100K miles, bucket seats, console with floor shifter and a 390 2V/C6. The older gentleman that owns it is the second owner and bought it with low miles in the late '70's. He loved it and took excellent care of it. He said the A/C and everything worked good when he parked it and it ran and drove very good. I looked at it briefly about a month ago and, as I remember, didn't see any rust and the original paint looked good. I don't think it was an "XL/GT" but I don't remember. At the time it wasn't for sale, so I didn't pay real close attention. The Gentleman is now disabled with bone cancer (can't hardly walk) and wants it to go to a "good home". He said he would let me have it for $1000. My guess is it's worth $2500 to $3000 as it sits and $5000 to $6000 with very little work and money.

    I have a real straight '97 Ford F250 Heavy Duty that I bought from my employer this spring for $800. It is an excellent truck and I use it regularly. The NADA book value on the truck is around $4300. Here's my thought:

    * Sell the truck for around $3000 - $3500.
    * Buy the Galaxie for $1000.
    * Use the rest of the money to a mild restoration on the Galaxie.

    I could scrape up $1000 AND still keep my truck, but (A) I have too many unfinanced projects as it is, and (B) I really want to get the Galaxie restored ASAP. I would love to be able to take the old gentleman for a ride in his "pride and joy" before it's too late. He reminds me a lot of my own Father that passed away 8 years ago from cancer. The pictures attached are not the actual car, but will give you an idea of what a '69 Galaxie XL Sportsroof looks like.

              You really had to ask the question? You know you want it and you will kick yourself later if you don't. If you find out you can't keep it, you can always sell it later and you will have no regrets that you didn't buy it.

                  I think it's unanimous, do it. Like Noname said, if it doesn't work out, you can always sell it later. But at least you'll have no regrets about what might have been.

                        Buying the car is a no-brainer, but my brother thinks I should keep my truck and just scrape up a grand to buy the car. Problem with that is, with no money available to restore it right away, it will end up sitting half completed like all my other projects (see my sig below). I only got about $900 invested in my truck and I can't replace it for 4 times that amount. My view is that I can take my pick of 50 trucks under $3K later on, but this is one of those cars that is a wise investment and I'll kick myself later if I don't jump on it!
                        Just like the drivable '70 Mach 1 I was offered for $3500 seven years ago that would now be worth $20K to $25K. Or the '73 Mach 1 with a 429 Cobra Jet that I could have bought on my Dad's estate sale for $1200.

                        If it all works out I'll post picks of it. By the way, check out this website for some cool and rare old Galaxies, Mustangs and Fords.
