  • MPG run, part three

Today I made another run for max MPG. The variable being tested this time was ignition. I added a 45,000 volt coil (details at end of post), and NGK BPR6EY-11 plugs, gapped to .048 and indexed to face the center of the combustion chamber. The larger gap is allowed because of the greater energy of this coil vs. the stock one. This creates a larger spark of course, giving more efficient burning of the fuel, so you don't have to press the gas pedal down so far.

Atmospheric conditions: clear sky, little to no breeze, temp around 70. Began the test at 6:15 AM.

Car is basically stock except for larger front tires, 155/80x13 on Metro steelies, giving 4.4% overall higher gearing. Rears are 155/80x12, close to stock. Tires inflated to 35 PSI cold. Airbox modded to admit more air at higher RPMs, but this would have no effect at the 2200 RPM (55 MPH) I was cruising at. I did fold in the passenger mirror for better flow, like an L model. No special effort was made to lighten the car; it had a rear seat in it and a full-size 12" spare.

Cruised at 55 MPH on highways surrounding St. Louis, flat to slightly hilly terrain.

I filled up the tank to the very top, drove 85.4 actual miles after correcting the odometer error (1.5% low with these front tires), and filled it again, actually spilling some gas in the effort to make sure it was completely full. It took 1.46 gallons.

Result (drum roll please): 58.49 MPG @ 55+ MPH (it's hard to keep it exactly on 55 all the time). This included a small amount of city driving to and from the gas station, and the small amount of fuel spillage. If I round down to 1.4 gallons to allow for spillage, this comes to exactly 61 MPG.

This reaffirmed to me the value of adding a higher-energy coil and proper use of the plugs. I have done this before with Subarus, getting similar percentage increases in MPG.

Note 1: On my first run at 55 (see my post "MPG run"), I was not as careful filling the tank all the way before the run, so possibly when I filled it the second time to the very brim, it gave a falsely low MPG figure of 51. It may well have been 53 - 54, because even a .1 gallon inaccuracy can affect the MPG this much.

Note 2: When I drove at 45 MPH ("MPG Run, part deux") with the stock coil and Autolite 64 plugs, I got 62.5 MPG, with fuel being carefully added and the same odometer correction. So 10 MPH faster with the electronic mods gave almost the same thing.

Coil info: Got it from Jeg's, 800-345-4545. www.jegs.com Part # 555-40105. It's red, cylindrical and $25. They also have them in chrome (555-40100) and yellow (555-40107). The chrome bracket is 555-40190, $4.

My next runs will be at 60 MPH to be a little more real-world. First with larger, heavier tires (185/60x14 on aluminum wheels); then again with those tires but an ignition timing advance + 93 octane gas.

I'm tempted to make an early-morning Sunday run at 45 MPH, to see if I can break 70 MPG.

Closed. I can't imagine how opening them would do anything but lower mileage, due to making a more turbulent airflow.

When I added 3 degrees more initial advance, I gained 2 MPG (running 93 octane).

When I swapped in the Aspire transmission, I lost the 2 MPG, so I'm back to stock mileage. The car accelerates much better though.

Not yet; I was considering a pinstripe, so held off on waxing it because I wanted it on the paint, not the wax. I think I'll pass on the pinstripe though, so I'll go ahead and wax it.

I think you should do a run stop and top off and wax it then and there. And then run back to see if there is an improvment. One thing I notice when I wax mine is a reduction in wind noise. For whatever that's worth, Just my 2cents

i know it seems counter productive to have the rear windows open, but they actually act like a spoiler and reduce the vaccum pocket behind the festy therefor reducing drag. i'm not tripping when i say i see an improvement with them open. give it a try, what's the worst that can happen? i just recomend you have a front window open a bit to help equalize cabin pressure.

Hmm. Interesting. My rears are pretty much never open. Might have to open them up on this tank, and see if it makes a difference. Well, maybe first I'll do a tank with them closed, and see how much difference the rear brakes not dragging makes.

OK, you talked me into it. Then I'll try Greg's suggestion to wax it. Then the bigger tires. Then ignition advance. This is getting to be a full-time job. What next, a sail?!?

Someday when there is a strong west-east wind I want to try driving east for 100 miles or so, with all the other mods, since a strong wind will basically eliminate wind drag. Try for 70+ MPG, which I think is quite attainable.

Tom, this is REALLY cool! I'm amazed at your numbers. Can you explain what you mean by indexing the plugs for the center of the chamber?

The best I've ever done in a festy is 52MPG in an EFI model. I have reached the high 60's in a Metro XFi. Right now I'm finishing up a Japanese built 89 XFi (150 #'s lighter than the CAMI built models) with a 93 XFi motor and trans. I plan to gut the interior minus the front seats, make rear skirts, install flush headlights and possibly moon disks. Should reach 70MPG in ideal conditions at 55MPH.

                      Thanks for posting your results...

Sweet! Love what you're doing! I think hybrids are hy-larious. IIRC the Metro xfi had higher gearing to get better economy, right? And had of course a 3-cyl 1 liter motor.

Indexing goes like this: hold your spark plug horizontally in your hand, so that the plug gap is facing up. Then on the top end of the ceramic part, i.e. farthest from the plug gap, put a small mark with a permanent marker (I use red) to show what side of the plug the gap is on, since you won't be able to see the gap when you install the plug. The idea is to have the gap face the center of the combustion chamber, so it will face the intake valve, giving it a better chance to burn all the incoming fuel. So as you install the plug and start to get it snug, you take the socket off a couple of times to make sure the mark is facing up. On two of my plugs the mark is facing exactly up, and the other two are within 45 degrees.

Also of course don't forget to use anti-sieze on the threads.

You can go to 13" wheels to get back the higher overall gearing you lost with the Aspire trans.
