  • Ram air on carb = bad fuel economy?

I have a 1988 1.3l carb mazda 121 (ford festiva). I changed the radiator in it, and in doing so i had to remove some of the inlet snorkle. The opening for the air filter is now directly behind the grill.

So would this hurt fuel economy as there is more air being pushed through which means more fuel is sucked through?

Below is a pic of a normal air intake snout, 2nd pic is mine in current condition.

    Thanks.

you'll just be sucking in some hot air due to the location above the exhaust manifold, which does reduce power. Just plum it up with a pipe to the cold outside air

More air without more fuel will result in a lean condition. Hot air is also less dense, so another lean condition. Reduction of power to say the least. But you could always pop it off drive it a mile or 2 and see. If it runs worse then put it back on. My .02c

In general, I'd say they are correct. On my current Stiva, I have no pipe of any kind into my air filter. Just an open hole in the housing, sucking air off the top of the engine, and I'm getting, generally 42+ mpg.

I'm not saying it's a good thing or a bad thing, just saying I don't think it's causing me any problems with fuel economy or performance. And yes, I will get the plumbing and do it right.

I think the greater issue is air temp, not "ram air" effect. I suspect you would have to be going at illegal speeds for it to make much difference.

Well, the biggest problem is that someone put your master cylinder on the "wrong" side of the car. I would have that looked at :happy8::usa2::tard:

What speed do you sit on when on the freeway?

It has to be on that side, because they drive on the wrong side down there too.

Additional air in shouldnt be the problem because its only going to ad more fuel and air when you mash on the accelerator - I would look towards temp - its now sucking air off the exaust and radiator instead of the slightly cooler fender - try piping in a inlet that gets you around the radiator
