  • MPG Run #7 (city-street hypermiling)

Decided to try hypermiling on city streets, just to see what happens.

The car: 1.3 5-speed, taller 13" front tires, 32 PSI in all tires, 45,000-volt coil with 10% larger plug gaps, ignition advanced about 4 degrees, using premium gas because of ignition advance.

I drove it on city streets exclusively over a period of four days, using almost every trick I know to get better mileage. The one thing I did not do was close the windows for more airstream slipperyness. I felt it wouldn't matter much at speeds under 40 MPH, and it was more comfortable with them open.

Mainly what I did was accelerate slowly, shift at 2500 RPM, kept cruising RPM under 2000, coasted wherever possible, coasted with engine off when traffic was light, shut off engine when approaching yellow or red lights, left engine off until light turned green. I looked ahead to try to anticipate traffic conditions that might slow me down, so sometimes I would change lanes to keep moving. WARNING: if you shut off the engine while moving, just turn it one click to ACC. If you turn it all the way off to LOCK, you lock your steering. This will be briefly exciting until the crash.

The result: I drove 76.4 miles and used 1.51 gallons of gas, for a city-street MPG figure of 50.6 MPG. I note that festyxfi has glovebox literature for sale, and the window sticker lists mileage as 35/41 city/hwy. I believe this is for a manual trans.

I did this just as an experiment, and do not normally drive this way. But you can use some of these techniques at your discretion to improve mileage; all are safe except turning off the motor when there is significant traffic around.

Is this fuel injected? Mine is carb'd and I can get about the same around town. I have a 4 speed, and don't shut it off while driving. Have you noticed a big improvement since adjusting the timing?
The normal is not always normal... MOST is not ALL... And any job can be hard if you don't have the right tools!!!

      Yes, it's a 1990 EFI 5-speed.

Do an actual test like the one I do to check your mileage. Fill the tank all the way to the top at the beginning and end of the test; that is crucial or the results mean nothing.

This is the only city test I am doing, so I can't compare mileage. But on the hwy tests, there was only a small difference when advancing the timing.
