Does anybody know which number/letter indicates the year on the VIN tag? I was told the GL I bought was a '92 but the book in the glovebox is for an '88. TIA

Look on the drivers side door frame. There should be a sticker that'll tell you what year it is.

If it says "GL" on it, it should be a '91 or later, unless someone put on a different hatch that say's "GL." Or a "GL" sticker.
If it is a 5 speed FI, it's a '91 or later GL.
If it's an ATX, it could be an early model, since ATXs were FI.
There was a grille change in '90 as well. Of course grilles are easy to change.
In short, if it's really a "GL" then it's a '91 or later. The fancier models from '88 to '90 were all labelled "LX."
