Self-Powered Mobile Aircraft Float Winter Storage Device

No holes drilled in the car. Everything fastened using ratchet straps, including to both rear seat lapbelt mounting brackets and up through the vent windows for lateral stability.

When good Festies can be had cheaply, it makes perfect sense to use them to store stuff. This was my AK daily driver, an 88 4-speed, since 2002. I replaced it with a clean rust-free '91 that I found on CL ANC.

Ingres/egress is through the rear hatch. Sledge hammer on board for emergencies.

A forklift put the floats on the car after they were removed from the bottom of the airplane, which was hoisted up inside a hangar to remove the floats and reinstall wheels. This way, I don't have to pay to have the floats stored somewhere for the winter. I just park the Festy+floats rig as you see it in my carport until spring.

You should mount the pontoons on the side of the car and have the first amphibious festy. Just mount a 10HP outboard on the rear bumper and your set.

Actually, floats don't weigh all that much. This is close to the smallest size available from this manufacturer, and they're rated at 2000 lbs, which I think refers to what one float can support. The airplane, when on floats, has a max legal weight, including fuel and people) of 2106 pounds, including the floats. I think the floats themselves only weight about 250 pounds, including all the rigging. Each float has 7 watertight (or nearly so) compartments, so you can hit something (short of a submerged log, more like a beaver) on landing and not sink.

BTW, I owned a '64 Amphicar for about 10 years. Terrible boat, terrible car, but you didn't have to remember where you left the boat trailer. My license plate frame said "Amphicar / My Other Boat Flies."
