  • Another Amazing car (Toyota Echo)

    Hi guys (and gals)

Last week I was out in Nor-Cal visiting my family, bought, fixed and promptly sold that 97 Aspire, still needing something to drive home I bought an 03 Echo of the local CL. They are one of the cars I pay attention to (prices, etc.) usually fetching around 4K to 6K depending on miles and condition (I've seen a few in the 2K range) The one I picked up is probably the LEAST desirable model in my value system (4-dr, auto trans) but the price was more than right (2800) 125K, silver, A/C. etc. I changed the oil and rotated the tires for the trip back to the icebox (Mn.) hoping to be lucky at 30mpg. I ended up getting no less than 40MPG and once got 51MPG with a major tailwind!! On top of that, the Echo cruises at 75-80 with zero effort (unlike my beloved carbie) who more enjoys 60-65. My lil carbie only pulls 40MPG on a good day these days (she's tired) I planned on selling the echo for a few bucks upon return, but thinking now I might keep it for a while. It's very comfortable, quiet (in relation to a gutted 89 festy) and seems to get less repulsive looks from young women...

I use to have an 00 2-dr 5-spd Echo that easily pulled 50MPG on the freeway. They sold a 2-dr hatchback echo in Canada for a few years that I can only imagine rivals the XFi in MPG's.

That VVT-i motor is one under rated little power plant. Every "worst cars" article I come across always lists the Echo, which I never understand. Simple, reliable and frigg'n 45+MPG!!!

    FX
    Because....45 MPG.

Yeah, the auto trany and Manual in Echo do not get significantly different MPG.

Nice thing about Echo is drive train parts availability; xA,XB(first gen), and Yaris use the same engine and maybe variations on a theme with the trany.

Yeah, for the right price I'd pick one up.
I'd have snatched up that '03 just as you did.

good find and at a decent price too. they never imported the 2 dr echo hatchback to the states? nothing wrong with toyotas, though i think they made better products a few yrs ago. im thinking of the yaris and the poor paint quality when i say that.

"and seems to get less repulsive looks from young women" hey, thats always a plus for buying a new car!

I would think if you drive a festiva daily, that wouldn't matter to you by now.
Otherwise, I'm sure GM or chrysler will be happy to take your money!

The Echo's are kinda ugly (the sedan style anyway), but hey man, AWESOME! They seem like decent cars (haven't seen one with rust yet so that's good.....and I live in rust central!)

I've been eyeing the Echos for quite a while. Never drove one, but would like to. I would think the center gage console and lack of anything behind the steering wheel might take some getting used to.

I've been looking at craigslist Echoes lately. There were a couple of '01s for under 2800 or so that tempted me. I'd be partial to the two door 5 speeds.

The Echo is one of the few cars I'm planning on replacing Festivas with when mine become too old and decrepit. I may pick up an Echo sooner rather than later, to begin "learning" how to keep them.

The other cars I'm considering would be Escorts (particularly ZX/2s), Kia Rios ('03 and later--no automatics) and maybe a Focus (kinda like the wagon).

Agreed, but they're as close as were're likely to get to our trusty Festivas.

It is a little strange for about an hour, then you find yourself looking toward the right spot. At night it actually goes easier on the eyes. I read the reason they went with that particular cluster is the ease of building LH and RH cars for various markets. All it takes is a simple switch out of the center piece and it's either side. The whole dash is like that, jusr swap the glovebox over to whatever side the steering wheel isn't. Saves porduction costs, keeping the overall price down (then smarty Toyotians)...

The Echo was the tercel replacement (after oh, 20+ years!) there's a few cheap feeling aspects to it I'm finding, the door locks and trunk or sort of sticky and clunky. The wind cranks seem to get lose fast (like the metro) and the seats could be softer (talk about utilitarian interior) it's like an 88 L in there!!

I'm pretty sure they never sold a deluxe trim model Echo in the US, but i've seen three different trim levels for the Canadian market. One really nice "RS" model hatchback with power everything and alum. rims.

Just another reason I'm moving to Canada.... When I do, I'll offer my 4-dr sedan up here for sale at cost.

Oh, and still love'n me some festy everyone....not going anywhere. Just swapped over my studded winter 13's.

The Yaris and Echo are the same car...our Echo was called Yaris overseas. The Echo was designed for the US market and then sent elsewhere unde rthe Yaris name...if I am correct. Rear main seal leaks on Echos and Tercels. Not too hard to fix though. I am curious what the next Yaris will look like. Maybe it will be all headlight on the front next time? The Echo had some odd burlap like upholstery that is almost impossible to clean. Why the need for a monster dash board that juts out so much? Cab forward design? In any case...I drove and almost bought a used one in 2003 with 55K a five speed four door in silver with the body kit from the factory. It had a temperature light that turned blue? It was peppy and quiet and rode surprisingly well. The shifter was snick snick fun! In all it was a happy car and at that time I could have gotten it for $5500! I passed though.

When my Festiva completely rots away in a couple more years from the Minnesota salt, I may very well replace it with an Echo.
