  • Did my Festiva brakes today

Finally got the front pads on today. What a pita those dang guide pins are!
I started to change them last weekend and discovered the rust welded guide pins, so put off to this weekend to get all new brake hardware. What a POS design too. I mean, i'm used to measuring my time spent changing pads in minutes, not hours! I soaked them PB Blaster last weekend, yesterday and today, hammer tapping on 'em, and resoaking them ever once in a while and when I go to change them today, it was a battle all the way. One pin I couldnt get to even move for like a half hour. I beat that punch and cursed and finally ....movement! Other 3 not much better.
Anyway, thanks to all advice received on last weekends post. I did use a drill to ream out the holes b4 reassembly, and gave a good coat of anti-seize to those pesky NEW guide pins and back of pads too. All is well that ends well I guess. Gave it a break in test drive and is stopping real nice. Now I can work on the tranny from my F150. It blew the input shaft gear. Common to Mazda M5OD's when the fluid gets low I just found out.

When I did my first suspension swap on Muttstiva, my '89L, back around 2002, I dealt with scads of rust which necessitated much penetrating oil and pounding. It felt more like I was an automotive archaeologist than a mechanic!

My parents driveway really looked like a dig, with dirt replaced by rust particles, dust and odd pieces.

The only things missing were the grid markings and some cute female archaeologists to help me out.
