  • How to title an imported car from Japan?

Hey guys, does anyone have any experience titling a car imported from japan, or know anything about it? I tried looking it up but couldn't really make sense of all the legal jargon that I came up with. I'm just wondering about how much it would cost and if it's worth the hassle. This is for a newer car (well 1997), but it's a really nice car with super low miles so I don't wanna miss out if it's a good deal. The car is located in California now, and I have family close by that could probably look at it for me before hand. Thanks for any info!

Short answer is that it is probably not worth it. You would have to essentially become a company that could fit it with all the required safety and emissions equipment required in the USA, and prove that it was in compliance. Lotsa money and paperwork.

For an older car, pre-OBD II, pre-airbag, pre-emissions, it might be worthwhile. I think any car over 35 years old can be brought in with no problem. As the cars get progressively younger, they must be in compliance with whatever laws were in effect at the time.

Thanks! I was figuring it probably wasn't worth it, just needed another opinion.

If its already in California maybe it is already titled for cali, which I imagine would make it pretty easy.

You will find it virtually impossible to put the thing on the road - its doable I've seen them out there - but there are quite a few hoops and legal red tape that you have to go through

I wonder if you contacted 1 of those sellers on Ebay that always have the imported Minis for sale and ask how they went about getting them titled here.

              Unfortunately it isn't already titled.

I know those are easier to title due to the older age like Tominmo mentioned above.
Oh well, I think I'm just gonna forget about this car

I'd have no problem doing that, just wouldn't want to get screwed over if the car were stolen or in an accident.
