I've been keeping my eyes open for a good deal on a Yaris. It had to be a 2-dr HB 5-spd (of course) just like our beloved festys. A few weeks ago I came across this one in Utah:
cruise, A/C, that's about it for options. The same 1.5L VVT-i from the Echo...but it don't get the echo MPG's unfortunately. It might have something to do with being 400 #'s heavier, and according to knowledgeble econoheads, a HB disturbs the air more than a sedan. That's the only two differences I can think of.
If I REALLY try hard (cruising at 55mph for hundreds of flat miles) it will pull 42MPG. unsually it's in the high 30's.
I will hand it to Toyota: it's comfortable, quiet and fun to drive (for a kind of econo-box).
That's it guys. My tired 89 carbed festy cab beat that on an average day.
Got an amazing deal on it. Already planning to sell it for a modest profit and pick up a clean EFI festy.
