  • Gas mileage run

I did a gas mileage run over the weekend to test the new Hot coil and wires to see if they helped and Wow, did they ever!
    Mpg before ignition upgrade 40mpg
    Mpg after ignition upgrade 46mpg

Previous posts about this coil produced mixed reply's, so I am posting to give results. I had a chance to run stock tires on a long haul and compare stock setup vs the ignition upgrades I have done.
To recap, I installed new Mallory 51,000 volt coil, new Bosch dist. cap and rotor, new Taylor Red 8MM wires to my stock festy engine.
Results: Improved idle, improved power, and improved gas mileage.
So, hotter coil and 8MM wires= improved performance.

Plus the RED wires and Chrome and Red coil do look Cool!

Also, thanks to TOM for the ignition upgrade/mileage run posts. Definitely a help! Weber carb next! (HHO too)

Good info, but would have liked to see data on replacing the coil only.
As it is how much of your improvement is due to new wires, cap, and rotor?
Any chance to swap back to the original coil and keep everything else the same and do the same run?

Wondering if you re-gapped the plugs when you upped the voltage from the coil. That was something else Tom did. That is going to be my Festiva Project of the Week, this weekend.

Hello all, and thanks for all the Q's. I knew it would come to how much did the plugs, cap, etc, contribute. All components were replaced when I bought it. The only thing that I didnt like were the cheapo wires that were on there.
So, here it is: Gapped the plugs to .048. Cap and rotor were good, replaced just cause their cheap and wanted all to be top shape. Did this run before and thats how I got the 40mpg. A hotter spark WILL ignite the gas/ox mix better, for a more efficient burn. (see TominMo's posts about his ignition upgrade and mpg runs, thats where I got the idea.) I can actually feel it pull a little harder on takeoff, and doent slow going uphill like it did before. Old plugs were fairly new and had no issues. They still looked new. So, if ya want, I would say that 30% mpg increase due to new wires and componets and 70% from coil.
8MM GOOD wires to handle the higher volts better. Taylor - all silicone wires.
46mpg is GREAT for a carbed motor with 189,000 miles. This car probably didnt see those kinda numbers in its entire life.

Oh, its also breaking my 195/60/14 tires loose on takeoff, which it didnt want to do before, unless I popped the clutch.

You're recording that kind of mileage with those tires?? Is that actual, recorded mileage or have you factored for the different tire size? That's freaking amazing if you're getting that kind of mileage considering your speedo and odo should be off around 6 percent, or so.

No,No, I switched to the stock tires for the run. Gee, if that had been on the 14's, that would be like 50+ mpg on the stock 12's! I wish! (but maybe, if I ever get around to adding the HHO!)

Dan, now do a run with the big tires for the comparison. On the hwy you might actually get better mileage since they are taller. But in the city with stop-and-go driving you would definitely get worse mileage since they are heavier; because they take more energy to get moving from a stop. Good work BTW.

Alright someone refresh my memory. What is HHO?
Also do you recall the part number for the coil?
An ignition upgrade is one I would like to add to mine.

HHO is a water/baking soda mix that pulls hydrocarbons from the fuel. Google it. I've put 2 in series on a geo metro and it got 70 mpg...

70 MPG?!?! Why doesn't everyone do this? Is there a downside, like engine longevity or something?
