  • V-Tec 1.6 L SOHC

I was reading through the rules for one of our local tracks and they state that no DOHC V-Tec's are allowed but you can use a 1.6L V-Tec SOHC. Is there such a thing as a SOHC V-Tec and if so, what is it found in?
    You gonna race that thing?

No, I am pretty sure there is no engine that comes stock with a SOHC V-TEC. Anyways the equivalent of a SOHC with VTEC would be the same as running a DOHC with no VTEC.

What would be really cool would be to see someone swap VTEC into a SOHC, I don't know if it is possible though, since VTEC simply adjusting timing, etc...

I think they're just trying to keep the ricers off the track.

 There are SOHC VTEC motors. They are d-series, 92-00 EX had d16 I think, 1.6 SOHC. 01 to like 06 had a d17 SOHC. 92-95 VX also had a 1.5 VTEC-E that was an economy version of VTEC.

There were also 1.6 and 1.5 SOHC VTEC's from Japan. My buddy has a JDM 1.5 SOHC VTEC in a del sol with an evo 16g turbo on it.

Well that rule is for power ratings, SOHC vtec's make around 100hp, while a DOHC VTEC makes between 160-250hp depending on which one.

EX's were rated at 127hp! They could scoot, and you could make ok power with a turbo. What an odd rule though, I know it was already asked, but what kind of track?

We had a guy bring a non-turbo Del Sol to the track one time. He was bragging about how light the car was and he was going to kick some butt. It didn't work out that way though.
He got HIS butt kicked by a Festiva and about 5 other random make cars.

Del Sols weigh 2500 pounds, his car is not light.

there was an article in Import Tunner about converting a non-VTECH motor into a VTECH - the guy was building kits to sell that are bolt on - I'll see if I can dig up the article tonight.

Yeah, they are small, but certainly not duper light. It moves with the turbo on there, though my Impreza will soon spank him. I'd love to do the same with my Festiva, hahahha.

Holy jeeze, that looks like it could be fun! They have what appears to be mustangs on the track though, and most of those came v6 or v8, so I wonder why no DOHC VTEC...

The Mustangs are 4 cylinder and they don't run in the same class as the FWD 4 cylinders.

I found an in-car view of the Del Sol getting passed by the Festiva. It's the Green car about 1-1/2 minutes into the video. The video is not all one race. It's a combination of the best action shots from the year (2006). This video was from a different track than the one I mentioned above. This track is a 1/3 mile dirt oval. If you look at the last few seconds of the video at the end, you will see the Festiva dive to the infield. The white car that passes the Festiva at the very end spun the car that was in front of him going down the front stretch and into the corner. When the white car spun the other car it rolled right down toward the Festiva and hit it in the driver's door. If you look closely at the lower passenger side corner of the windshield, you will see a glimpse of the rolling car's front bumper.
                            Here's the video link:
