  • Shop Manual Question

What is the name of the manual or source that gives the amount of time allocated to do a particular job. For example, 2.5 hours to do a front wheel bearing, or something like that. I'm starting to get random Festy owners, not from the site, wanting me to work on their cars. Unfortunately, I don't know what to charge because I don't know how long a job should take.

Any help would be appreciated and thanks in advance.

I don't know of a manual, but if you can't find one you could call a shop like Meineke, they will give you a quote which includes job time usually, but you may only be able to do that a couple times.

Unless your charging them a mechanics rate I wouldn't worry about the time.
You might have to agree on a per job rate.
And don't sell your skills short.

If you have access to ALLDATA or know someone who does, you can get the times from that also.

              Hey Jim,
If I purchased a Chiltons Labor and Parts Guide for 1993, that would pretty much cover the times allocated for certain repairs, 1990-1993, correct?

Years ago my dad who was a mechanic had a "Motors" Flat Rate Manual. I don't know if "Motors Manuals" are still available.

I figured $30 an hour. 2 1/2 hour job = $75. If it takes me 5 hours, well, that's on me.

yeah, they usually span several years, so anywhere from '93 to '97 should be safe.
