My mom came real close to buying a Maverick Stallion. Her early Maverick had gotten to the point of needing major rust repair so she decided it was time for a new one. The dealer didn't have a Stallion in stock and it was going to take a while to get one so she bought a Comet the had on the lot instead. A freind of mine got to drive his parents 4 door Maverick when he first got his license. It was a sleeper. Full wheel covers, whitewalls, and a 302. THAT was a fun car.

lol, Jim you beat me to it. There's a bunch o' stuff out there for that engine. I'm a big proponent of keeping original engines in older classic cars, instead of dropping in a V8, etc.

Your maverick will be a great project!
If it has boobs or wheels, sooner or later you're going to have trouble with it.

I bought a '72 4-door Comet with a 302 about 20 years ago for my sister to drive. She let her Ex-husband take it in the divorce and he sold it back to me for $100. I pulled the engine & trans and scrapped the body. When I tore the engine down it had a MEXICAN block! I wish I would have kept the car and installed some 351 Windsor heads, headers, 4V and my 3.55TL 8" pumpkin. It would have made a great sleeper.

FFW: The I6 is great, but that car is screaming 347 stroker! The 6-Cyl front suspension is perfect for weight transfer.

my first car was a 1976 mercury comet 4 door. the straight 6 250 was bullet proof. i got 10 mpg all the time no matter what. the day i sold it i took the belt off the frozen a/c pump and the hp seemed to double. the girl i sold it to said the mileage did too. it was a fun car but when i broke the rear end loose of the body, i had to bolt plates in place because when we tried to weld it it kept blowing holes in the pot metal. i went mudding so much on the way home from college in that thing there would be a ring of mud around the car a foot tall. my mom was always p.o.'d at me for that. what a great car. i had the biggest plans for that car. there were momo's i had planned, gun metal grey silver metallic paint, lowered 2" in front and 1" in the back. tint all the way around....ahhh to be young in the early 90's again...back when rocking 2 12" subs and a 360 watt alphasonic demon amp were cool...whatever, got a 66 charger and the festiva now. over it but a great memory thanks for that.
