I bought an orange tach and remember that I was able to reset the mileage to the correct value for my Festiva without too much trouble and without having to break anything.

Don't ask me how. It was a long time ago. I do remember that no one had told me how to do it, or even that it was possible. I just took it apart and slowly figured it out.

I remember how excited I was when I "found" my tach cluster several years ago. I could hardly wait to get it installed so I could start using it.

There was only one problem. When I got the mileage set for my car and installed it so I could watch the needle sweep around as I drove, I realized that I had no need of it. I've never thought to race anyone so the idea of hitting exact shift points was lost on me. I like to think that my car will tell me exactly when it wants to be shifted, if I will just listen closely enough. (No radio, by choice.)

But after a while, the thing grew on me and soon became one of the favorite modifications I have made to my car. Here is my list of advantages in order of importance.

                            1. Since I have had it I have never left my lights on and come back to a dead battery. Also, I have never since had to stop, after walking several blocks, to return to my car to be sure I turned off the lights. Over the years that alone has been worth a lot more than the $25 I paid for the cluster.

                            2. Every time I buy gas I reset the trip odometer so I can quickly calculate my mileage at each fill up. At first I used to write the information on pieces of paper kept in the glove compartment. Then, for a while, I used a small notebook. Then I found an even more efficient method. I got a receipt every time which told the date, number of gallons, price per gallon, and all I had to do was to record the total mileage plus the trip mileage, calculate the MPG, and write that on the receipt. Keeping on top of these mileage calculations I believe is one of the best ways to monitor the condition of your engine.

                            3. Though I haven't felt the need to use the tach in my driving, it is a definite advantage to be able to monitor the idle speed. I have it set for 700 rpm and when I look down and see the needle stuck on that mark, I feel that all is well.

I predict you're going to love your new toy.

ok i got it all hooked up and all is well but i have some concerns now.

before my car stayed about half way between C and mid range, now with the new cluster its mid range plus a few hairs... hmm

the fuel tank read 1/4 before and 1/2 tank after.. weird.

my car will idle at 2000 rpms; take note i havnt fully tested the whole hot/cold etc idling i only know my engine was hot and it would idle at 2k like after i press the clutch in at a stop sign etc. i dont know what conditions the car is supposed to idle at for certain rpms. any insight on this?
