Escort GT Transmissions

Some of you may know I used to have a 1991 Escort GT. I gave it to my nephew when he turned 16 on the condition that he give it back to me if he ever wanted to be rid of it. Well, he loves the car a lot, that's no surprise. My wife and I drove the car for many years without any trouble, but he was stranded by the car a few days ago....a trusted mechanic has told him that the five speed tranny is beyond repair. I am no mechanic for sure, but this guy has never done my nephew's family wrong in the past. Long story short, my nephew has asked me to help him find another transmission for the car. I looked on Pull-a-Part's website and there are MANY Escorts there. I know that the GT has a different tranny than the regular Escort...what I don't know is what I should look for in a transmission. Maybe some signs that it's been decently cared for and if it's good at all....

If I pull one it will be the first I've done...unless someone has a spare lying around? :p

check the fluid if you can. if there is some in there and its not metallic then you're good.

I had a hard time finding a tranny when I bought my EGT. Good luck though

there was a 5speed in the GT i took the ECU out of, but it might be gone by now
