I once fixed a tie-rod that came off on my Bronco while 4 wheeling, with an old steel cable from a compound bow. I hammered the tie-rod back into place and wrapped the cable around it to hold it up into place and drove the 60 miles home with no problem. :p Bought tie-rods when I got home.
I did this before, on another car with a coat hanger, when I was a kid and short on money. Drove to work for like a week. (Not recommended)
