  • 1974 datsun 240z rebuild/repair help

Ok. so here is the back story of the car.
My adopted brother's dad bought this car in I think the early 80's.
He died and it sat in a garage covered since early 90's.
After he died, my adopted bro took ownership of the car.
Long story short. "he got HI and got the car running, then decided he wanted to rebuild engine, took it out, half tore motor apart and never touched it again"
I have been given rights to finish car and get it "back to restored as possible"
    exceptions being the motor.
I have a mechanic on hand to assist in any work I cant do.
motor has/had 60,000 original miles before he took it apart and it got rained on/in.
The car has reciepts from every tiny thing bought for it since the 70's.
EVERYTHING, down to air fresheners and gas reciepts. "there is tons and tons of oem nos parts for interior" in the car in boxes

    now for the Q's.
What is the best action for the motor?
    rebuild?
find another replacement motor from same type car?
or replace motor with something more up to date? V8,etc...
car is lime green! will post pix tomorrow.
looked but no real luck on whats the best plan to go with.
Im getting paid real good, so I am gonna do my best "better than I did on my car"

    thanks.

Might be a 72? I know its a 240z though, badge on back says it is.
Not really wanting a monster V8 lol, well if it were mine I would,
but its going to my adopted bro when finished around sept.
So a easy/reliable V8/stock V6 will be fine for him.

        Cool,

Yeah that site is ideal even if you don't want a monster car. Everything you need to swap or a book to show in detail how to make the parts yourself and step by step instructions for the swap. Might I suggest a 4.3 ltr chevy? My friend has one out of a 2wd early 90's pickup in his , and it's a great choice. It provides good power and reliability from a cheap and readily available engine. The mpg are surprisingly good too. I'd reccomend going with a tbi one over the vortech.

keep the Nissan/Datsun engine! They were great! Ditch the Hitachi copies of Solex carbs, though. Go with some modern Mikunis or Dellortos.

A master rebuild kit is possibly the way Im gonna go.
considering it was running, I think I will stay with oem engine.
rebuild engine, Buy another trans"5speed" and rebuild carbs.
get body dis-assembled and painted, then start reinstalling everything.
new tires 195x70-14's will be put on it. (original 175x75-14's are still on it from the 80's)
            pix to come soon.
            thanks for the advice
