  • Slim pickins at Harry's

I went to Harry's U-pull it in Hazleton yesterday in a quest for a 1.8 SOHC. They had a grand total of one. 1.6 SOHC's weren't much better. I found one in an MX3 and one in a 323. I grabbed the 1.8, but I had to feel sorry for the previous owner. In PA, the state gives you a temporary license placard to place in the back window when you buy a car. The poor guy never got his permanent license before he wrecked the car because the temporary placard was still in the back window.
    You gonna race that thing?

Thanks for the tip, but after the fun I had pulling this motor, I don't know if I want to pull another one. The car had been hit on the left front side and the whole front end was pushed toward the right. The car body was wrapped around the transmission and with the body crushed from the side there was not enough room to separate the engine from the transmission. We had to remove the engine and transmission as a unit out through the bottom of the car by sort of standing the engine on its nose because of the way the car body was holding on to the transmission. It took 2 of us more than 4 hours to get it out.

I did a leak down test on it yesterday and one cylinder pegged the gauge in the "green". The other 3 cylinders leaked like a sieve out the valves. Probably if the engine was started and run a while the other 3 would have improved. I've got a rebuilt head that only has about 3 hours of run time on it since it was rebuilt so I'm just going to swap heads. Besides that, it will save me time. I run a carbed intake on it and I have to drill and tap the injector holes to put pipe plugs in them as well as some other water connection holes.

FYI, if you like goin to Upull its. Theres a Shortys u pull it in Bridgeport PA, i live about 3 miles from it, and when i was there about 3 weeks ago, they had a Red Festiva. Most interior parts and body panels were still there. But engine wise not so much. Funny thing was there was a Capri Turbo sitting next to it with the turbo sawd off.
