I would get a mid 80s Honda civic, CRX, or a Toyota Celica. It would have to have a four cylinder and be a manual trans. They would be cheap on gas and easy to work on since its not as technology advanced as todays vehicles.Man should eat when he can for Man does not know when his last meal will be.

Something little different. I love old Volvos, but been there, done that. I actually put a 300-6 in my '84 4wd Ranger, that was interesting. If it had to be a car, think something like a 1959 Studebaker Lark with original straight six, only modified with a 5spd and front disc brakes. Or possibly a 1974 Audi Fox (carbureted). Neither of which would be easy to find in good shape.
Think I would go with the Lark. Course probably most practical thing to make a Lark into a daily driver would be to put a 90s era Ford Ranger 2.3L with the 5 spd. Boring but practical and cheap to keep. Can just imagine trying to get parts for the original Studebaker engine though they were a neat old engine. And would need front disc brakes.
