  • Deer and Timing belts....

Went deer hunting this weekend (rifle season opener) and Sunday afternoon I went to start the Festy and the Timing Belt Broke!!!!
I was 130 miles from home, out in the boondocks. Amazingly, I actually found a timing belt for a Festiva, on a Sunday afternoon, out in the boonies! drool
My bud Rick and I had to drive 35 miles one way to get it, but I got it. At an Autozone in a colledge town. (Rolla, Mo.) Whew! Had me worried for a while there.
Well, I layed in the dirt and changed it, had it done in about 3 hours, including the 1 1/2 hour drive to town and back and still had time to get an evening hunt in too!

To top off all this, I just changed the valve seals, new valve cover gasket, and painted valve cover. Put it all back together Friday, the same day I left to go hunting. I was wondering what shape the timing belt was in while putting that stuff on. Guess I just found out!

Sounds like you know the area pretty well. SE of Fort Leonard Wood, near Licking, Mo. Had CWD down there a couple years back, deer herd population is down. There is a big buck there I have been chasing for about 3 years now.
Huge 10 point! Good mass. Rattled him in for my son last year and he blew it by not paying attention. Snuck in behind us to with in 10 yards.
My son heard a grunt way behind us, I told him to turn around and watch closely, it wasnt a hunter that made that grunt! His short attention span didnt last long and it snuck in behind us and seen us same time we seen him. My son couldnt react fast enough, and I couldnt swing my gun to that side because my son was sitting there. So the buck was OUTTA there!
                Now that buck is edumacated!

Yeah I was stationed at Fort leonard wood for five years. In dem der parts there is nothing elses to do but hunt or fish. At least around Fort Leonard Wood. I never had the chance to go, but one day though I want to try it. About all I did up there was squirrel hunting with my buddy on whim. His idea, I figured there would be nothing left of the squirrel since we were using shotguns.

.... How many miles did you have on that timing belt before it broke?
.... An interesting thought: how did you know, on the spot, how to align the camshaft with the crankshaft out in the boonies with few tools? And to get all those small bolts and shims off and than back on and in a very tight area at that??

                    (Interesting) Thanks

lol..... Actually, I was with friends and drove to town where I also bought a Haynes Festiva manual along with the belt at the auto store(didnt want to try and remember all that! Now I have 2 manuals) They helped me work on it

I feel like all cars should be non-interference... sometimes it feels like engineering makes things more difficult than it needs to be.

Better take care of that WRX simon...although there is a guy in my region I think who has over 200K on the stock belt...I think he is waiting to break it just to see how long an OEM subaru belt will go...kind of funny.
