  • 7 days, 4 friends, 1 festiva, 5000 miles

Well myself and three of my friends (Josh, Petra, Keri) have decided to take a road trip during the week of thanksgiving! Our main goal is the see the Grand Canyon. Everything else we decide to stop and see will just be icing on the cake!

We are going to take "Cherry", the red 92 I picked up for $100 about two months ago.

We are leaving tomorrow night, heading out I40 almost the whole way, then staying a day or two at the GC and then rolling north thru the Rockies to Denver and then homeward on I70/I64.

So if any of you see a little red festy loaded down w/ people give us a honk!!

For anyone interested, this is our general planed route of travel:

I took my '76 Chevette out to Paulden, AZ for my first handgun class at Gunsite in 1982. I think I hopped on I40 in OK and remember going through Tucumcari, Amarillo and Albuquerque before turning south after going on a long downhill descent out of Flagstaff. Farthest from home I'd ever been at that point (I was 22). My Chevette ran great even with the smaller engine (1400 cc with 52 hp at 5200 rpm in a 2150 pound car).

Here's wishing you a great trip for you and your friends Nate!

You'll have tools with you, right?

        Your Trip

Any thoughts on the amounts of snow you're going to run into? Growing up in Oklahoma City......when we took trips to California during the same time period.....we always took a more southern route (south of I-40)......are you sure turning north for your return route would be safe? Just my thoughts.....will say a little prayer for you & your friends.

We were sitting around a fire at our house a few weeks ago, Petra mentioned she might fly to the GC for thanksgiving break... I chimed in "road trip" and that was that :p

I will have tools and some spare parts: dizzy, vaf, belts, fuel pump, some extra coolant hose, etc. I just put the engine in this car 3k miles ago, so it has brand new water pump, timing belt, good clutch, etc. It runs like its right off the line! But its always the little things that decide to fail that can mess up a trip like this.

I'm putting new struts and a new cat on it now... then a few more minor things and I think it'll be set.

As far as snow, I thought about that... we'll have to keep an eye on the weather. If it looks like it may snow bad enough to cause delays on the hwy we may have to consider a more southerly return route. Do you have any suggestes for something further south of I40 that is a nice road to drive?
              ~Nate

while you're in there nate, add some heavier rear springs for the trip, you'll be glad you did.

Sounds like quite a haul! When we were talking about a trip to Las Vegas I commented the gas will the majority of the trip the wife said well why don't we take the Festiva? Shocked me a bit. But now after a few upgrades the Festiva is nicer to drive than the Escape... don't know we'll see when the time comes. She even wants to make the trip to the next Festiva Madness. Wave when you go through KC! Depending on when you go through may just see you!
