  • Sloppy 5 speed??

I have a '92 Festiva 5speed. The shifter seems "sloppy". Sure, I know its not a precise Subaru STI or anything....... but when I put it in gear, the shifter seems to wobble around a lot.

Is that normal? Doesn't pop OUT of gear, but seems to move a round a lot.

    Thanks guys & gals!

i have heard about this before but it was in an rx7, turns out some bolts were just loose in there somewhere, the guy tightenend them up and it was brand new again, not saying this is your problem, but it could be a possible solution

depends the definition of sloppy. If you were to measure in inches, (or fractions thereof) how far is the shifter moving in gear (left to right)? That may help narrow down the issue.

There is a bolt that connects the shifter itself, to the shift rod that goes to the transmission. Accessible from underneath the car- that would also be a good initial check.

OK, let me clarify (and I'll double check this tonight when I get home)......... when I mean sloppy...... I'm talking the car is in gear, but the shifter seems to wobble about several INCHES, not fractions of an inch..... Kinda odd being its still in gear that I can move it that much.....

              Does that help any?

OK, bushings it is... how hard of an install is it? Can it be done from inside the car or does it get done from below?

Corksport bushings? Those only appear to be 4 out of the 6....

Use the Search function, I remember someone finding replacement parts, likely Mazda, just can't find the thread.
If I find it I'll append it here.

                      All done under the car.
I'm afraid in your part of the country, might be best to buy another shifter and replace the bushings on it then swap the whole assembly back in your car.
I'm guessing your shifter, it bushings and associated hardware (bolts, nuts, washers) are likely a single lump of corroded metal.
Might want to check first though, hope I'm wrong!

My car has only been up in NY for about 3 years now....... originally a Louisiana car so I'm hoping its not TOO bad.....

I really need to just get under there and look to see how things connect together..... unless there are photos posted somewhere......

                            NAPA Shifter Bushings

                            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I found bushings today. A cooperative counter man looked and looked through the computer until a photo matched. He got two and they fit my shifter and bolt which I had brought along.

The two with tax cost $2.78

Photo of package with all numbers and bushings attached.

                            Paul ................
Attached Thumbnails.....i couldnt get the pics to load but the NAPA part # is 0771303 his post has a pic of the parts an the part # tag
.................................................. .....................paul39 from asheville found these in another thread
