Stumbled on the MPGuino that gives MPG readings. It's a DIY project for electronics guys. Probably not for beginners but if you already have everything possible on your Festiva, why not?

See it and read about it here: http://spiffie.org/kits/mpguino/

There's some good info here too: http://combustory.com/wiki/index.php/MPGuino

They sell them preassembled on ecomodder I think.

You're gonna need a VSS though.

That's pretty much impossible in any electronic form.

I wouldn't be so hasty with the "impossible" there are ways to monitor both fuel usage and distance traveled using a carbie system my uncle had one in his Ford Maverick back in the late 70's.
Now how accurate it was is another matter.

VSS should be in the instrument cluster. I know they are in the aspire.

Festivas don't have them. You can get one that goes in line with the speedo cable though. Rockauto carries them.

But with my oversize tires, it would not be correct if using the speedo cable.

About as accurate as keeping a journal at fill ups is my guess

Spend your time and effort making your car handle better or go faster... personally I don't focus much on mpg...just my 02 cents.

Well just because you don't care how much you spend on gas doesn't mean nobody else does. Anyone can make a car have good handling and acceleration performance. Frankly I'm more impressed with mileage performance. Even better is the those combined.

Oh I care for sure...just saying that for most...time, effort, costs are typically limited...so with that in mind, prioritizing things that improve driving...even improve actual engine efficiency...is time better spent than gadgets which just provide information.

I think the MPG gadget is fairly cool...whats up with the fuelly thing in your sig and some others? Thats crazy mileage on your 1.6 turbo...is that a B6t swap or something? I have a GTX that gets nowhere close to that.

Instantaneous MPG feedback is a proven way to improve overall MPG and driving habits.

Fuelly is just a site dedicated to keeping track of your fuel usage.

Yeah its a b6t. It does better than a gtx because it weighs half a ton less, and has half as many drive wheels. Probably has less cruising rpm too.

Didn't read that way in your previous post.
I agree with Bhazard, near instant feedback via this "gadget" will do more for most people in terms of MPG than anything else. Engine efficacy isn't going to get much better until we raise the temperature at which we extract work from the system (thermodynamics).

How about a BP swap running 44+ MPG.

                              John,
That mileage on your car is awesome. My bp swap averages anywhere between 33 and 35 but your driving habits are probably a lot more sensible that mine. I still grin every time my exhaust rumbles. I cant seem to keep the darn thing under 70 on the expressway either. I signed up for the fuelly just to watch it but it already has me trying to keep my speed not over 65 just trying to beat my last tank. Sorry if I jacked your thread.
