  • fuel pump activation question

will the fuel pump run with the ignition in the "on" position (not started) and supply fuel even if the engine is not running?

To help understand why I am asking this, here is what I want to do:
I have an 91 escort Gt that I want to get running before I take it out of the car.... the fuel pump in it is bad.. i've checked all measures, and even put 12V directly to the pump.. doesn't work..
So, i want to use the festiva fuel pump/clean fuel, route a 12 foot fuel line (temporary of course) just to START the EGT...so at the fuel filter "out" side, run a long long hose to the EGT fuel supply line... then be able to start the EGT to run (of course not drive it).

    i hope that makes sense...

According to my 1990 shop manual the answer is "no".

Now this isn't to say you couldn't bypass the fuel pump relay to get it to pump. Unless there's a way to do a fuel pump test. (I thought I saw something on this once, but I 'm not sure).

The only other thing that may cause a "hiccup" in the process may be the fuel pressure regulator on the EGT.

Hopefully someone else with a bit more knowledge on the subject will chime in.

some one step in if im wrong but i believe you have to jump the relay or power the fuel pump some how on the festiva... or put something in the vaf meter to hold the vane open a bit. because the vaf meter vane has to be open a bit to complete the fuel pump circuit(it has an internal switch)
I know its a piece of crap but im still faster...and its 100% legal!!!!!

OK. So after a little digging I found that according to my 1990 electrical and vacuum trouble shooting manual there is a "fuel pump test connector", (at least in 1990).

It's suppose to be located near the master cylinder. The colors of the wires are:

        Green w/red stripe

        Black

        Hope this helps.

you can jump it like said above but the eaisest is just to stick somthing in the vaf... a big "T" handle works great and it wont get sucked in to the intake...

ok, thanks guys... so if i just hold the vane airflow open somehow, it will keep the fuel pump running... i can't picture that process w/o looking at it.. i'll take it apart today and see.....

the fuel pump relay connector is a tan/beige color and it's a T shaped plug... used it when I was first using the polar express..... gotten that fixed now though...
