1965 Mustang

I have been waiting for 2 years to get this car and finally have a covered place to store it in my shop...
-Has a 302 out of a 77 Grenada (getting tired)
-Rebuilt C4 auto 10 years ago
-Is an early 65 model, has a few 64.5 parts from the factory

I had a buddy in high school who had that car with a four speed and a 289. It was a nice car !! Wasnt uber fast but respectable and a good combo. Ive thought about that car many times. It would have been a good keeper.

Yeah, its green...i'll have to post a better picture as the sun was setting....... the original color was a blue (kind of like the border in each post in this thread).... has '289' on the front fender... came with that originally.

Nice looking car. '77 302 should have flat top pistons and large (76cc ?) chamber heads. Score some early 302 or 351W heads and you'll get a nice boost in compression. I have a friend that found a Mexican 302 block in a Granada once. The bare block was worth more than the whole car.

My dad had a 64.5 the same color. It was a factory 260/3sp car with a generator and all the stuff unique to the 64.5.

Cool! We had a 64.5 Mustang, 3 speed with the 260, it was Champagne with a tan interior. We bought it in Oklahoma. But the wierd part was, is we found out that the original owners that bought the car, lived in the same town that we did in Texas.

Go find yourself an Explorer/Mountaineer 302 in a junkyard, put some Trick Flow valve springs on it and a Trick Flow Stage 1 cam in it, put your carb intake and carb on it and drop it in. That's the quick recipe for a 12 second engine in a Fox Mustang...it'll be just as fun in a '65.

I ordered a new '65 notch, 271 HP/4spd in '64. Dark metallic green in color. I had met Ak Miller at a car show in St. Louis. Miller was the Ford performance guru at the time. He gave me a list of the goodies to put in the order form which amounted to a car just short of a Shelby. Right after I placed my order, Ford went on strike. The wait was agonizing. I had the car for about 10 years. Some time in the early 80s I signed my name at a video rental place and the clerk started asking a few questions. One was, "Did you ever own a 65 Mustang?" We talked about the car. He was the current owner. He recognized my name from paper work left with the car. He said he would drive it in the next day. Yep, it was the one. Still original and still had the old 'reverb" wiring going to the trunk which I had installed. The car cost $3200 and change new in Jan 65. I sold it in maybe 1976 for $800. (One of life's other poor decisions.)
I asked the guy how much he paid for it. He said he would be to embarrassed to say but hinted to something over $5 Grand.
New, the car came with only a 90 day warranty on the drive line. Everything in the HP package drive line was bigger. Forged crank and pistons, cast iron header type exhaust manifolds, cam, no vacuum advance, and proper carburetor. Bigger clutch, bigger 4spd, fatter U joints and drive shaft, and bigger rear end gears. Goodyear "Blue Streak" tires too. It wasn't the fastest car on the planet but I did install traction control bars on the rear to hold it on the pavement during aggressive acceleration. Although these cars were built no better than a Falcon or Fairlane, they were a marketing coup that set the stage for future 'pony cars' to come.

My wife's grandfather bought a brand new stang first year. It was a white V8, 3-speed car with red interior. He gave it to my wife's aunt and her husband wrapped it around a tree. Her grandfather tells me everytime he sees me that he wishes he'd given it to me instead. Yeah, me too.

I just found the original owners manual today in a box. I love looking at old manuals, they're full of so much cool stuff.

Nice whip! Thats when mustangs were mustangs, not junkstangs! Shouldnt be to hard to find a 289 out of a farelane.
