I've never understood why they don't come out with sliding doors (like on the vans) for all doors. It would make door dings obsolete and be easier for everyone.

I have seen a few service vans with the sliding doors that slide up... basically a slider mechanism on each side that lets the door slide straight up instead of straight back. Good for working in tight places I guess because you don't have an extra ten inches worth of door adding to the width of the vehicle.

Ford experimented with articulated door hinges in the 1960s.
