  • Locked my keys in my car.

This morning I came out from work to find my keys still in the ignition. I had unlocked this car before when this happened by using a drinking straw so I looked around but couldn't find one. Then I looked down in my wal-mart bag to find that the pack of socks I just bought had a cardboard backing.

Sure enough, I tore off a strip and 2 seconds later, I'm inside. Probably no point to lock these cars up is there?
Any difference that makes no difference is no difference.

I like my Jetta because it's impossible to lock the keys inside. How do you open it with a piece of cardboard?

Just like a slim jim I would imagine. Anything that's stiff enough and thin enough can be slid down between the window and seal and push down the locking linkage. Literally takes seconds.

Ditto. Don't think I've ever locked the hatch on any of my festivas. Course, I live out in the boonies.

I used to unlock my Festivas with a house key. I have yet to see a Festiva with door lock cylinders that work like they should.

I remember one of the Ohiostiva meets we held a "who can start the Festiva with a different key" day. I'm pretty sure that everyone was able to start Casper with their key...

At FM3, I think we figured out that Batstiva's key would start roughly 1/3 of the cars parked in Dean's yard Friday night. Oddly, it wouldn't unlock very many.

I figured it would be the other way around.

I'd imagine the door locks only had a few tumblers and the ignition had all the tumblers for the key.

It's odd that the one key would start a lot of cars but not unlock many.

is this from them being of junky quality so they break easy allowing you to use other keys? Or did they use only a certain amount of keys to keep cost down?

Greywolf, do you think the fact that they have been in use a min of 18 yrs has anything to do with it?
No, they were not the highest quality locks ever made, but what did you expect for a $8K car?
I'll bet the passenger side lock were tested you'd find the number keys that would open then would be greatly reduced.
Some for the ignition, it is worn from use so small changes in the key profiles don't make much if any difference.
You'd be much less happy when wear accumulated your key just didn't work!
