  • Magnet glued to the back of the Festiva? How to remove?

I have a "Gone But Not Forgotten" magnet that the lady who owned the car before me glued onto the back of the Festiva because "she was afraid someone would steal her magnet" (she was old). I believe it is super-glued. How can I remove it? I believe in supporting my troops but a magnet glued to my car is a little much.

Paint thinner should work, or at least help, if its just a plastic bumper that is. If its painted then I don't know if that's a good idea

I believe you could dump a little paint thinner or laquer thinner over the magnet and that should free the glue I believe, just dont try and sand your paint lol.

Yeah it's on the hatch. I have some finger nail polish remover handy I was gonna try that first. If not I'll try getting some paint thinner.

Yeah, I've gotten paint thinner on paint before, it doesn't hurt it at all unless you try hurting it. Although, once you pull the magnet off, with the paint thinner there, it might pull some paint with the magnet, not positive tho.

Try a heat gun on it before you try lacquer thinner just in case...

They make a Debonder for super glues. Should be able to find it at any hardware store.

Get the Debonder. Try Hobby shops for it.
If it don't fit, use a bigger hammer!

Try some boiling hot water. Pour it on slow and steady.

Is it on the metal hatch or the bumper?
Don't use a heat gun on the grey plastic bumper.
It is TPO (thermo plastic olefin) which deflects (warps and/or melts) with heat. That's why they can grind it up into pellets and use it again as rework at the injection molders.
TPO is resistant to gas and oil.

I like the kettle of boiling water idea,,,, only a couple hundred degrees, if it is going to loosen, that should be all you need.
Aspires and Sways all around, Miata B6 installed, KYB G2Rs just installed in front. Wish for coil overs someday.

A magnet you say? Get a ferrous wheel for your grinder. Remember, like magnet fields repel. Strong fields repel stronger. Be sure the ferrous wheel is of opposite polarity to the glued on magnet. You or your car could end up in the next county. Strapping yourself and the car to a firm object may be advisable. The science is still out on rotating magnetic fields.

A heat gun or hair dryer should work to soften the glue. After removing the magnet try some goo gone or buffing compund to clean up the paint.
