Smokes on startup

90 l plus 172,000 smokes on startup should a guy be scared about that. No noise at all from engine. Get 1500 to 2000 on oil it starts using it. No foul on plugs. Add oil and keep on trucken or do something. Thank you steve

Mine burns oil like no other, if its just on start up it might just be your rings. Everyone has told me my problem is the valve guides because I burn oil even while driving.

change to GTX high milage (green bottle) and run some SeaFoam in the engine. no need to worry, its just the valve stem seals leaking a bit.

if it starts then smokes then goes away, likely its your valve seals.( dont worry about it) if its constantly puffing, its leaking past somthing and burning it. piston ring/oil ring, very worn valve seals valve seats, ect

is it just on startup or all the time? your piston rings may be leaking a little, i'd say a compression check would be your next step. also could be valve seals. with 172K on the engine, may be getting a little tired.

Mine smokes on start up too, and uses almost a quart a week! i put 575 miles a week on mine and it has 276,000 on it and still going

what color smoke is it? white or kinda blue ish? id say run a compression test and do a leakdown test on each cylinder too. if one cyl is low then you can pinpoint where it is leaking to. sounds like valve guides but ive had head gaskets do the same thing, not likely but possible.

I had this problem on my Fiat; it fouled the #3 plug in as little as 100 miles.

It turn out not to be the seals, but a cracked valve guide. Replacing the guide (steel guide pressed into aluminum head) fixed the problem.
