  • "Dogbone" type wrenches?

I've been seeing the "dogbone" type multi wrenches around, from HF, Sears, etc. How do they do, especially as a compact "junkyard cruising" tool to carry with you along with screwdriver, pliers, etc? Are they worth buying, and if so, should I get a better quality one or go cheap at HF?

    Opinions & experiences, please!

I find that the stubby wrenches and stuff are great for junk yarding. Nuts and bolts that are hard to break can be a pain though. Haven't seen the dog bone wrench you refer to yet.

I think he's talking about this:

A little bulky, yes, but if one can fit it into area needed, they work. Good for where studs/bolts stick out past the nut, as they are through hole and work like a deep well socket.

Well that's a neat idea. I'd never heard of these before.

They are pretty bulky and the Craftsman ones don't lock into place so if your really torquing on a bolt then it will slip off and say bye bye to your knuckles. I think Kolbalt makes a set that lock in which would be a lot better IMO.

I use rachets much more often at yards since the cars are in he air and I usually find more leverage. I like the regular pivot type breaker bars in 1/2 and 3/8" and then use this to unfasten once broken loose. you can twist both directions and it still goes the same way. walmart has them cheaper from time to time when they are slow sellers.

I have seen those dogbone copies at home depot but they didn't seem to have metrics

I like to "travel light" at the yards, anything that can double as something else goes in the bag. Screw wire cutters get some decent tin snips, ones that dont bend on sheet metal. never know when you need to cut cut cut up some interior to save time.

Karl, I tried to look them up but I can't find a pick. I purchased a set of two ratcheting metric Duralast wrenches from AZ and they are sweet because they have 8 sizes on 2 wrenches and they ratchet. I have been using mine for a while and they seem pretty durable for all the more they cost. I think I paid 15 for the set.

I want my friend's Metrinch set. It's nice because you can use it on freaking anything.

Thanks for the info all. I think I'll be looking into the B & D Ready Wrench, but also rethinking how I can "travel light" in a junkyard to save time and effort.

I got the BnD ready wrench for Xmas, when you have the space to use it it's great, got searched a couple times in the airport but I like it a lot, no searching for the right size in the box anymore.
