  • Another New Guy.

    Hi Everyone,

I just bought my first festiva. Its going to be my getting to work car. I drive 100 miles+ a day and my GMC Envoy is killing me with its poor mpg. I haven't picked up the car yet. I will pick it up Saturday. Its a 91 with PS, AC and only 56,000 miles on it. I will be doing a tune up the fist day I have it. Not sure if the timming belt has been done yet. Will this thing wipe out the valves if the belt breaks? Also, are there any mods I can do to help out with MPG's?

    Thanks,

    Jeff

welcome to the site bro we seem to be getting lots of new peeps lately. for your mpgs i know that upgrading your intake filter is a good start and putting a more free flowing exhaust ex. muffler and high flow cat will help with the mpgs. again welcome and your festy is a good find and has some sought after features like ps and ac good find

If the timing belt breaks you won't kill the valves. These are non-interference engines. Wouldn't want to be stranded like that, though. Recommended interval is 60k on the timing belt, so I'd doubt it's been done.
Check your fuel mileage after the tune up. Stock 1.3 fuel mileage is usually pretty good. Mid 30s to low 40s is pretty common. Just to let you know, copper core spark plugs are your best bet with these cars.
There is an airbox mod that some have done. Cheap as free. Just drill 25-30 quarter inch holes in the bottom of the filter box. It makes a big difference on the top end.

Welcome to the forum. Post some pics after you pick it up!

I have seen festys with well over 250K on original timing belts. Non interference engine FTW! 53 mpg is a common best mpg. And 300,000 miles is the average lifespan. Welcome to the addiction.

                  Welcome!

I must say I've taken off a couple timing belts from B3 (stock 1.3) and B6 (Mazda 323 1.6) engines, and I've never seen a ratty one. They probably can go well over 100K miles without breaking.

I live in Harpers Ferry WV. I think a lot of people are doing research like me on the best MPG used cars. If you don't want to spend 15 grand or more on a used hybrid but you want 40+ mpg you have 3 choices, a early Honda Civic, Geo Metro, or a Festiva. I'm a Ford guy so the choice was easy. So I think gas prices are driving all the new people to get one of these. I also have a Merkur XR4Ti and a Thunderbird Turbo Coupe so I like odd ball cars but those 2 are project cars and no good for everyday use.

I should take that XR4Ti off your hands so you can spend more time on your festy...

The festiva is the official state car of WV! lol! We have a few members from WV. We have a meet coming up in WV as well. We have some fierce 2.3 turbo cars on this site as well. And in case you didn't know yet the festiva is a mazda 121.

I made the "mistake" of joining this forum, only to be "kidnapped" by several other members, and had my car "torn apart" a few times, only to discover that... Well, it looks like this:
